On 17 and 18 May we will hold a workshop at WU Vienna on the topic “Cooperation for Exploitation”, featuring a number of invited international speakers from different disciplines and methodological backgrounds.

This workshop deals with the tension that arises when people have to cooperate in order to exploit others. Cooperation-based exploitation dynamics are observed when thieves work in teams, when ruling coalitions exclude others from resources, when rogue groups siphon off the wealth of developing countries, and when the reciprocal gift exchange behaviour of political elites re-directs the surplus of a developed nation into the hands of those elites. The workshop aims to illuminate many facets of such processes, including how such group members can trust each other while at the same time behaving in an untrustworthy way towards others; how exploitative coalitions form, and what affects their stability; and how a society can design institutions that discourage exploitative cooperation by subgroups while still encouraging socially beneficial cooperation across the society as a whole.  It is envisioned that contributions to the workshop will be methodologically and conceptually diverse.
