Abstract:

Diese Studie entwickelt eine originelle Konzeptualisierung der Angst vor der Automatisierung und bewertet ihre Determinanten, wie die Rolle der Technologie am Arbeitsplatz (komplementär oder substitutiv), die Routine der Aufgaben, die Exposition der Arbeitnehmer gegenüber der Technologie und die Position der Arbeitnehmer auf dem Arbeitsmarkt. Anhand von Umfragedaten aus sechs zentralen EU-Ländern - Österreich, Deutschland, Tschechien, Ungarn, Polen und der Slowakei - haben wir herausgefunden, dass der Kontakt mit der Technologie die Angst vor der Automatisierung erhöht, ähnlich wie die Substitution von Aufgaben. Junge, weniger gebildete und einkommensschwache Personen sind ängstlicher, während das Geschlecht keine signifikante Auswirkung zeigt. Abschließend erörtern wir, wie sich die Angst vor der Automatisierung auf die Motivation zur Umschulung in der betrieblichen Praxis auswirkt.

 

Die Seminarreihe wird vom Wiener Institut für Internationale Wirtschaftsvergleiche (wiiw) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem FIW sowie dem European University Institute organisiert. Das Seminar bietet ein Forum für die Präsentation und Diskussion aktueller akademischer Forschung im Bereich der internationalen Wirtschaft.

OUTLINE

Der Forschungsschwerpunkt Internationale Wirtschaft kündigt seine 17. Forschungskonferenz „International Economics“ an und lädt zur Einreichung von (vollständigen) Working Papers ein, die auf der Konferenz präsentiert werden sollen.

Beiträge von Doktoranden, jungen Fakultätsmitgliedern und jungen Forschern in ähnlichen Positionen sind besonders willkommen, da die Konferenz junge Wirtschaftswissenschaftler unterstützen und ermutigen soll, indem sie ihnen die Möglichkeit gibt, ihre Arbeit sowohl anderen jungen Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern als auch erfahrenen älteren Forschern vorzustellen.

 

TIME & LOCATION

Die 17. FIW-Forschungskonferenz findet am Donnerstag, 20. Februar 2025 und Freitag, 21. Februar 2025 an der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (WU Wien), Welthandelsplatz 1, 1020 Wien statt.

 

PAPER SUBMISSION

Wir bitten um die Einreichung von (vollständigen) Arbeitspapieren zu allen Themen aus dem Bereich der Internationalen Wirtschaft.

AWARDS
Es werden zwei Preise für die besten Beiträge zur Forschungskonferenz vergeben – der ‚Best Conference Paper Award 25′ und der ‚Young Economist Award 25‘. Jeder Preis ist mit 1000 € dotiert.

Abstract:

This study develops an original conceptualization of the fear of automation and assesses its determinants, such as the role of technology in the workplace (complementary or substitutive), task routineness, workers' exposure to technology, and workers' positions in the labor market. Using survey data from six Central EU countries—Austria, Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia—we found that exposure to technology increases the fear of automation, similar to task substitution. Youth, less educated, and lower-income individuals are more fearful, while gender shows no significant effect. In conclusion, we discuss how automation fears impact reskilling motivation in organizational practice

 

The seminar series is organised by the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) in co-operation with FIW and the European University Institute. The seminar provides a forum for presentation and discussion of recent academic research in the field of international economics.

OUTLINE

The Research Centre International Economics - FIW announces its 17th Research Conference ‘International Economics’ and invites the submission of (full) working papers to be presented at the conference.

Papers from Ph.D. students, young faculty members and young researchers in similar positions are particularly welcome as the conference aims to support and encourage young economists by providing an opportunity to present their work to fellow junior economists as well as experienced senior researchers.

 

TIME & LOCATION

The 17th FIW Research Conference on ‘International Economics’ will take place on Thursday, 20th February 2025 and Friday, 21st February 2025 at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna), Welthandelsplatz 1, 1020 Vienna, Austria.

 

PAPER SUBMISSION

We invite the submission of (full) working papers on all topics in the field of International Economics.

AWARDS
