Exploring the missing link in sustainable development: The social-ecological nexus

“Environmental challenges are, at their root, social problems that arise from income and power inequality. Thus, inequality is an environmental issue just as environmental degradation is a social issue (forming a “social-ecological nexus”), and solutions must address them jointly through principles and institutions rooted in justice.”  
Eloi Laurent will present a two-sided “social-ecological” approach to offer both analytical and empirical insights into the dynamics of this relationship on the 20th of May, in Vienna.

Dr. Eloi Laurent is a senior economist at OFCE (Sciences Po, Paris) and a Visiting Professor at Stanford University. A former aide in the French Parliament and for the French Prime Minister, his current research agenda focuses on environmental sustainability, welfare economics and new indicators of well-being and sustainability.

The WWWforEurope lecture series aims at providing insights about the latest research undertaken in a broad range of areas. As part of the framing and synthesis of the WWWforEurope project, a 7th Framework Programme project funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO), the lecture series will cover the main project topics as well as cross-cutting issues, for example the dichotomy of growth and climate protection, gender equity, distributional aspects, education, green innovation and EU governance. We would like to invite interested researchers and the general public, who seek to learn about recent developments in these areas key for a socio-ecological transition, to this lecture series.

Under the title of Welfare, Wealth and Work for Europe – WWWforEurope – a European research consortium is laying the analytical foundations for a new development strategy that enables a socio-ecological transition to high levels of employment, social inclusion, gender equity and environmental sustainability. The four year research project within the 7th Framework Programme funded by the European Commission started in April 2012.
The research consortium is coordinated by the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) and brings together researchers from 33 scientific institutions in 12 European countries with interdisciplinary expertise from economics and ecology to history, demography, political science and gender research.
Quality monitoring will be guaranteed by a high ranking scientific board including among others Nobel-Laureate Kenneth Arrow and Harvard economist Philippe Aghion.
