Abstract
The American Century has been a hugely successful construct, giving rise to an international system of rules, globalization, economic growth, and thus long periods of peace and prosperity for the global economy. When observers note the disruption in this global order and ask what might replace the international system of the last century, many naturally try to gauge the outcome of the geostrategic rivalry between the world's great powers. Such analysis might be misleading for the final outcome, for it provides a perspective on only the supply side of the market for world order. The demand side – the international community of nations besides the superpowers – matters too. I show how lesser nations exercise agency and can help determine the new world order.
