The economic demography of Europe: An overview with National Transfer Accounts

Bernhard Binder-Hammer,
Vienna Institute of Demography

Abstract:

European economies vary significantly in how they distribute and redistribute resources among different age groups. This not only impacts the consequences of ageing but also affects the opportunities and well-being of the younger population, as well as the ageing process itself. Despite its importance, there is limited accessible data on individual income by age and the effects of government transfers and family contributions. The European National Transfer Accounts address this gap by integrating age and gender dimensions into National Accounts. In the presentation I will provide an overview of the European National Transfer Accounts and present a range of indicators that describe European economies from an age perspective, highlighting changes from 2008 to 2023.

About the presenter:

Bernhard Binder-Hammer is a population economist and data scientist at the Vienna Institute of Demography and TU Wien. He integrates economic and demographic data to address challenges like demographic change and intergenerational fairness. A core of his work involves developing European National Transfer Accounts, which integrate age and sex into the European System of Accounts, providing a foundation for analyzing and monitoring economies across Europe from a generational perspective. His research explores age-specific income changes, intergenerational transfers, their sustainability, and growing imbalances between generations, aiming to understand their impact on economic development and generational wellbeing.
