In the eyes of some observers, the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the EU has been national rather than European. Border closures and lockdowns had severe effects on internal movement and economic activity. These developments raise important questions about the future of European integration. Would more coordinated action have resulted in greater resilience to the pandemic, and would it have better mitigated the economic fallout? In addition, the debate about financial aid for Member States heavily hit by COVID-19 created challenges for European solidarity.

This panel will bring together scholars from law, finance, political science and socio-economics to discuss prospects of the EU after the pandemic. The speakers will debate whether COVID-19 will weaken or strengthen the European Union. Is there a path toward a stronger Union by learning from the experience of the past year?
