Wir möchten Sie herzlich zu diesjährigen FIW-Forschungskonferenz einladen.

Die 14. FIW-Forschungskonferenz findet von 24.-25.2.2022 als Online-Event statt. Der Höhepunkt des Programms wird in der Keynote von Natalie Chen (University of Warwick) und der daran anschließenden Podiumsdiskussion „Implications of Global Value Chain Disruptions for European Import- and Consumer-Prices“ mit VertreterInnen österreichischer Unternehmen und VerantwortungsträgerInnen der österreichischen Wirtschaftspolitik bestehen

Das Hauptziel dieser Konferenz ist es, Ökonominnen und Ökonomen eine Plattform zu bieten, um aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse im Feld „International Economics“ zu präsentieren und sowohl mit Nachwuchsforscherinnen und Nachwuchsforschern als auch erfahrenen Seniorforscherinnen und Seniorforschern zu diskutieren. Papers von DoktorandInnen, jungen Fakultätsmitgliedern und jungen ForscherInnen in ähnlichen Positionen sind besonders willkommen, da sich das FIW zum Ziel setzt, junge ÖkonomInnen zu unterstützen und zu fördern. Dieses Jahr werden insgesamt 54 aktuelle Forschungspapiere aus dem Forschungsbereich International Economics präsentiert.

Description:

The presentation is based on a paper co-authored with Björn Richter and Kaspar Zimmermann.

This paper studies the long-run evolution of bank risk and its links to the macroeconomy. Using data for 17 advanced economies, we show that the riskiness of bank assets declined materially between 1870 and 2016. But even though bank assets have become safer, the losses on these assets are associated with increasingly large output gaps. Before 1945, bank asset returns had no excess predictive power for future economic activity, while after 1945 they have outperformed non-financials as a predictor of GDP. We provide evidence linking this increasing connectedness between banks and the macroeconomy to secular increases in financial and macroeconomic leverage.

Organizers: Peter Eppinger (Tübingen), Bohdan Kukharskyy (CUNY) Keynote Speakers: Pol Antràs (Harvard), Vasco Carvalho (Cambridge)

This workshop aims at bringing together scholars interested in international trade, multinational firms, and global supply chains, with a particular focus on network aspects of the global economy.

The workshop will take place in a seminar room inside the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s new landmark, with a stunning view of the harbor. We are committed to holding the workshop in person, subject to the hygiene measures applicable in July. Should an in-person turn out to be infeasible due to the pandemic, the workshop will be rescheduled to a later date.

Please submit complete papers in pdf format to GlobalEconNetworks@gmail.com by Monday, March 21, 2022. Participants will be notified in April.

We invite submissions from young scholars and aim for an international and diverse group. Interdisciplinary work is particularly welcome.

The event will encompass a luncheon with policy makers and business practitioners to enable an exchange of ideas on current issues in international trade and supply chains. The workshop is generously funded by the Joachim Herz Foundation, a charitable, science and education-promoting foundation based in Hamburg. Participants will be provided with accommodation in close proximity to the venue and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Speicherstadt. Airfares for speakers can be covered in exceptional cases. In case you require travel funding, please indicate this with your submission.

Save-the-Date: Bundesministerin Dr. Margarete Schramböck präsentiert das FIW-Jahresgutachten 2022 zur österreichischen Außenwirtschaft

Im Auftrag des Wirtschaftsministeriums veröffentlicht das Kompetenzzentrum "Forschungsschwerpunkt Internationale Wirtschaft" (FIW) seit dem Jahr 2020 im Februar ein jährliches Gutachten zur Lage der österreichischen Außenwirtschaft. Das bereits dritte Jahresgutachten wird am 21.02.2022 erscheinen.

Darin wird neben der Darstellung und Analyse der aktuellsten Entwicklungen hinsichtlich der österreichischen Außenwirtschaft, besonderes Augenmerk auf die kurz- und mittelfristige Prognose von möglichen zukünftigen Entwicklungen gelegt.

We would like to invite you to this year's FIW Research Conference.

The 14th FIW Research Conference will be held as an online event from 24-25 Feb 2022. The highlight of the program will be the keynote speech by Natalie Chen (University of Warwick) and the subsequent panel discussion "Implications of Global Value Chain Disruptions for European Import- and Consumer-Prices" with representatives of Austrian companies and responsible persons of the Austrian economic policy.

The main objective of this conference is to provide a platform for economists to present recent research results in the field of "International Economics" and to discuss them with both young researchers and experienced senior researchers. Papers from PhD students, young faculty members, and young researchers in similar positions are especially welcome, as FIW aims to support and encourage young economists. This year, a total of 54 recent research papers from the International Economics research area will be presented.

Save-the-Date: Federal Minister Dr. Margarete Schramböck presents the FIW Annual Report 2022

On behalf of the Ministry of Economics, the Competence Center "Forschungsschwerpunkt Internationale Wirtschaft" (FIW) has been publishing an annual report on the state of Austrian foreign trade in February since 2020. The already third annual report will be published on 21.02.2022.

In addition to the presentation and analysis of the most current developments with regard to the Austrian foreign trade, special attention is paid to the short and medium-term forecast of possible future developments of the international economy.
