Das FIW freut sich, Sie auch im Namen aller Kooperationspartner zur 9. FIW Forschungskonferenz von 1.-2. Dezember 2016 an der wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Wien einladen zu dürfen.

Trust in national governments in CESEE countries:
Does income distribution have an impact?

Abstract

Using data from the OeNB Euro Survey, this paper sheds light on the determinants of trust in national governments in ten Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (CESEE) countries in the period 2009-2015. Using a unique data set that allows us to construct a measure of income inequality at the regional level, this study is one of the first to focus on the impact of regional income inequality on trust in public institutions for most of the countries in our sample. By applying multilevel modelling to account for the hierarchical structure of the data, our main findings indicate that while trust in national institutions increases with relative income, it overall declines with the increase of regional inequality. This result is valid across different specifications tested and despite the slight decrease of income inequality over the period as shown by the regional Gini index. In addition, our analysis shows that institutional trust in the CESEE countries tends to be pro-cyclical, while households in the EU countries in our sample react less negatively to higher income inequality.

Ausschreibung: FIW Award für Masterarbeiten

Im Rahmen des Kompetenzzentrums „Forschungsschwerpunkt Internationale Wirtschaft“ wird der „FIW Award“ bis zu einer Höhe von € 3.000,00 für Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen ausgeschrieben.

Der Preis richtet sich an qualifizierte Wissenschafterinnen bis zu einer Altersgrenze von 35 Jahren, die ihre Masterarbeiten (oder Diplomarbeiten) an einer österreichischen Universität im Bereich „International Economics“ verfasst haben. Der „FIW Award“ hat das Ziel, hervorragende Masterarbeiten und Diplomarbeiten von Frauen sichtbar zu machen und zu prämieren. Frauen sollen damit motiviert werden, eine wissenschaftliche Karriere einzuschlagen.

Die Höhe des Preises von insgesamt € 3.000,00 kann auf mehrere Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen aufgeteilt werden.

Insbesondere werden theoretische, empirische und wirtschaftspolitische Masterarbeiten und Diplomarbeiten in folgenden Themenbereichen gefördert:

Internationale Makroökonomik, Außenwirtschaft, Europäische Integration, Internationaler Handel, Internationaler Wettbewerb, Direktinvestitionen, Migration, Internationale Wirtschaftsentwicklung, Multinationale Unternehmen, Entwicklungsökonomie, Globalisierung, Internationale Handels- und Finanzinstitutionen, Wechselkursregime und internationale Finanzmärkte¸ bzw. ähnliche Themen.

Der Abschluss der Masterarbeit oder Diplomarbeit (Beurteilungsdatum) muss im Zeitraum 1.1.2014-31.12.2016 erfolgt sein.
