Ariane Bertogg, University of Konstanz Abstract: Family members provide a substantial share of unpaid care to older adults. Less is known about the pathways into non-family care, despite the increasing family diversity. Research gaps concern the role of kinship structure and the specific "care context". My contribution asks: (1) how are individuals' embedment in kinship structures is associated with care provision to family members and non-family persons, and (2) how these associations vary between care contexts with their old-age care policies and care norms? Applying random effects logistic regression models to SHARE data, I find that one in four caregivers provides care to non-family persons. Individuals with neither partner nor children are more than twice as likely to provide non-family care as those with both a partner and children. Stronger family care norms discourage non-family care. This association is strongest for individuals with neither partner nor children. Regarding policies, I find evidence for a "crowding in"-effect: the greater state expenditures on formal services and care allowance, the more likely we observe non-family care. About the presenter: Ariane Bertogg is an assistant professor and research group leader at the University of Konstanz. The aim of her research is to study gender and socio-economic inequalities in health and wellbeing, unpaid care work and paid employment across the life course, with a special interest in later life. Taking a comparative perspective, her work investigates the cultural and institutional foundations for new inequalities arising in ageing societies.
