Webinar Claudio Borio, BIS: "Monetary Policy Challenges", Nov. 16
You are cordially invited to the following Webinar: Claudio BORIO Head of the Monetary and Economic Department of the Bank for International Settlements “Monetary policy challenges: economic, intellectual and institutional” Monday, November 16, 2020 10:30-12:00 After registering by email (Cornelia.Berger@wu.ac.at), you will receive the MS Teams link for the Webinar which can be opened directly from your web browser without having to install MS Teams. Claudio Borio is one of the internationally most recognized monetary policy experts. Monetary policy had a crucial role in fighting both the Great Financial Crisis of 2007/09 as well as the current Covid-19 crisis. Central banks moved into completely new – often unchartered waters – in order to contain the economic effects of the crises. Now, several large central banks, like the U.S. Fed or the European Central Bank, are in the process of reviewing their monetary policy strategies. Thus, what will be the future of monetary policy? The webinar is jointly organized by Aurel Schubert, former Director General Statistics, ECB and by the Institute for Analytical Economics at WU Vienna. Sincerely, Guido Schäfer Institute for Analytical Economics, Department of Economics, WU Vienna Welthandelsplatz 1, 1020 Vienna, Austria Tel.: + 431 31336 4579 Email: Guido.Schaefer@wu.ac.at
You are cordially invited to the following Webinar: Athanasios Orphanides Professor of the Practice of Global Economics and Management, MIT Sloan School of Management "The ECB's Monetary Policy Strategy Review" Monday, March 22, 2021 17:00 After registering by email (Cornelia.Berger@wu.ac.at), you will receive the Zoom link for the Webinar which can be opened directly from your web browser. The Covid-19 pandemic creates enormous challenges for economic policy. It serves as an early stress test for the new monetary policy frameworks which central banks are about to develop in the process of reviewing their strategies. What challenges does monetary policy face in the (post-)pandemic world saddled with high debt? Will current and future strategies be effective at supporting the recovery? From 2007 to 2012, Athanasios Orphanides served as Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus and was a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank. Apart from his current professorship at MIT Sloan, he is also an Honorary Advisor to the Bank of Japan's Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies, a member of the Shadow Open Market Committee, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Financial Studies, and a Research Fellow at the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability. The webinar is jointly organized by Aurel Schubert, former Director General Statistics, ECB and by the Institute for Analytical Economics at WU Vienna. Please note also the upcoming Webinar on April 30 with Frank Smets, Director General Economics, ECB, on monetary policy challenges in a high-debt (post-)pandemic world. You are cordially invited to the following Webinar: Frank Smets Director General Economics, European Central Bank “The ECB's Monetary Policy Strategy Review - An Overview of the Issues” Friday, April 30, 2021 10:00-12:00 After registering by email (Cornelia.Berger@wu.ac.at), you will receive the MS Teams link for the Webinar which can be opened directly from your web browser without having to install MS Teams. Frank Smets is one of the internationally most recognized monetary policy experts. Currently he is Director General for Economics at the European Central Bank and professor of international economics at KU Leuven. He heads the Secretariat of the ECB’s Strategy Review. Governments around the world have made vigorous use of fiscal policy to support domestic economies ailing from the Covid-19 pandemic, thus pushing up public debt levels. Also, monetary policy has provided substantial stimulus to stem the crisis by rolling out new large-scale asset purchase programs mainly targeting government bonds. At the same time, several central banks have gone or are going through a monetary policy strategy review. The ECB resumed its strategy review last September after a pause imposed by the pandemic and now aims to finish it around September 2021. The very high levels of government debt and other economic fallout from the pandemic will pose a first test for the future strategy.
