Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar on Wednesday, November 3rd, with Oliver Himmler (University of Erfurt) on "Low-touch interventions to improve academic performance in higher education -- evidence from two long-run field experiments" Abstract: Low-touch behavioral interventions can affect even notoriously hard to move outcomes, such as academic performance. However, the evidence is mostly short-term and it remains unclear whether such effects translate into long-run gains on policy relevant domains. We report results from two field experiments in higher education, offering a commitment device, and relative performance feedback. After 5+ years, we find that the interventions have positively affected graduation rates and lowered time to degree in the full sample. Heterogeneity analysis suggests that: (i) the effects of commitment are stronger for procrastinators, and (ii) the effects of feedback are concentrated among students who received favorable feedback. Behavioral interventions may therefore constitute an attractive complement to more traditional policy measures in education. Given the strong heterogeneity in effectiveness, however, they need to be carefully chosen and targeted. Registering your attendance and documenting your seat number are the basis for (official) contact tracing; providing incorrect information can have unpleasant consequences (quarantine) for you. * In any case, please comply with the attendance regulations for the course, which were communicated in advance in the eVVZ. In case you do not fulfil the attendance obligation without a provable important reason for your absence(s) (i.e. events that you cannot directly influence), you cannot be assessed positively. * Currently, there is no obligation to wear a mouth-nose mask during courses and examinations.
