Infections, in turn, have a negative impact on the development of chronic diseases. Individuals invest in their health to slow down health deficit accumulation and take measures to protect themselves from infectious diseases. We show how protection effort depends on individual characteristics, medical technology, and the disease environment. We calibrate the model for an average 20-year-old American in 2010 and use counterfactual computational experiments to examine the drivers of health behaviors and health outcomes during the epidemiological transition 1860--2010.The model is then used to predict behavior and long-term health outcomes in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the role of age, frailty, preferences, and the interaction between infectious and chronic diseases.
