The South Asia Region comprises eight countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) that range in size from India (with a population of over 1 billion) to Maldives (with 0.3 million people). The region has experienced a long period of robust economic growth, averaging 6% a year over the past 20 years. It was the second-fastest growing region in the world in the aftermath of the global crisis. This strong growth has translated into declining poverty and impressive improvements in human development. The percentage of people living below the poverty line fell in South Asia from 56% to 16% between 1981 and 2013. Still, the region remains home to a third of the world’s poorest, with 216 million people living below $1.9/day. The Office provides high-quality analysis to the regional Vice Presidency and represents it in internal and external discussions among specialists. The Office delivers a semiannual publication on growth prospects and analysis of topical issues for policy makers in South Asia. It leads the preparation of stand-alone flagship publications that examine topical issues for South Asia in depth. It provides guidance and inputs for other analytical work of the Vice Presidency. The SARCE Office is looking for an Economist with excellent research, analytical and communication skills to contribute to its main tasks and product lines. • High-quality research on topical issues that are of immediate concern to policymakers in emerging market and developing economies, including global macroeconomics, finance, and the energy transition. • Analytical contributions to the semi-annual South Asia Development Update, a regional flagship report. • Depending on the candidate’s expertise, work on topical issues related to macroeconomics, finance, and/or applied microeconomics, to contribute to the formulation of the South Asia Region’s views on regional economies and policy priorities. • The preparation of economic briefs, op-eds, and blogs for senior management on issues related to topical issues that affect the operations of the South Asia Region and its clients. • The development and improvement of tools for regional macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis. The Economist will be expected to deliver under tight and frequent deadlines in a fast-paced environment. S/he will work closely with a team of talented economists, under the guidance of the SARCE Office’s management. In addition to the contributions to the SARCE Office, the Economist will be expected to devote a fraction of his/her time to contribute to the work of other units in the South Asia Region. Selection Criteria • Master’s degree with 5 years of relevant experience; or Ph.D. with 3 years of relevant experience. Ph.D. in Economics or Finance strongly preferred. • Demonstrated strong analytical skills in one or more of the following fields: international economics, macroeconomics, finance, applied microeconomics, development economics, or econometrics. • Academic publications with quantitative economic analysis and modeling techniques. • Demonstrated ability to contribute to policy publications and to develop policy implications from economic analysis and modeling. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in a multi-cultural team. • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
