However, the evidence is mostly short-term and it remains unclear whether such effects translate into long-run gains on policy relevant domains. We report results from two field experiments in higher education, offering a commitment device, and relative performance feedback. After 5+ years, we find that the interventions have positively affected graduation rates and lowered time to degree in the full sample. Heterogeneity analysis suggests that: (i) the effects of commitment are stronger for procrastinators, and (ii) the effects of feedback are concentrated among students who received favorable feedback. Behavioral interventions may therefore constitute an attractive complement to more traditional policy measures in education. Given the strong heterogeneity in effectiveness, however, they need to be carefully chosen and targeted.
