WU Economic Research Seminar, 13.1.2021, 4.30 pm to 6 pm, Carsten Schröder (DIW Berlin)
Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar on Wednesday, January 13th, with Carsten Schröder (DIW Berlin) on "Improving the Coverage of the Top-Wealth Population in the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP)" Abstract: We have developed a new sampling strategy and implemented it in the field to better represent wealthy individuals in the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Our strategy is based on the empirical regularity that the very wealthy have at least part of their assets invested in shares, and that companies document shares of relevant shareholders in their books. Our results show that combined analysis of the SOEP and the new sample (SOEP-P) provides meaningful insights into individuals at the top end of the wealth distribution in Germany. The SOEP-P population has about 21 times higher net wealth on average than the SOEP population as a whole. Looking at millionaires (individuals with net worth in excess of one million euros) in comparison to the rest of the population, a number of other differences stand out. They differ from the non-rich population with regard to demographics, employment careers, personality, satisfaction with life and other important life domains.
