Abstract This paper examines how digital technological change affects labor market outcomes in an economy with a large vocational education and training (VET) system, using Austria as a case study. We combine Austrian administrative data with firm-level investment records and a novel sectoral measure of exposure to emerging digital technologies based on global patent activity. Using a shift–share design across Austrian labor market districts from 2012 to 2019, we estimate the impact of digitalization on employment and earnings. We find small but negative average effects of digital technology exposure on employment and income. These effects are driven by workers with low and higher education, while vocationally trained workers are largely unaffected. This pattern holds across genders, sectors, and fields of study, indicating that vocational education shields workers from the adverse effects of technological change.
