Dear colleagues, Earnings volatility and labor market volatility in Austria (OeNB Jubiläumsfond project 18710) Project presentation December 18, 2026, 12.00 - 13.00, K127A Department of Economics Johannes Kepler University Linz René Böheim and David Überall will present key results from their work conducted in the project "Earnings volatility and labor market volatility in Austria", financed by the OeNB. The project's website details the research at: https://www.jku.at/en/department-of-economics/research/research-projects/ear... Using administrative data, they examine volatility trends by gender, age, earnings deciles, and employment interruptions in Austria, 1980--2018. Earnings volatility has increased over this period, with employment interruptions as the main reason, particularly among employees in low-skill sectors and the lower earnings deciles. Through variance decomposition, the greater share of volatility can be attributed to demographic changes, including the impact of migration, sectoral shifts, and the growing labor force participation of women. Joint work with Christine Zulehner (Unversity of Vienna) shows that mothers return to the labor market more quickly after having a child if their own mother was working when they were 10 to 14 years old. Mothers influence their daughters' labour market attachment, particularly during their daughter's parenthood. Further results highlight the role of local factors in addition to parental factors in shaping labour market outcomes. A further evaluation of regional policy changes reducing childcare costs and their effects on parental employment concludes the analyses.
