Außenwirtschaftsvorlesung (Webinar) * Einladung: Seminar in International Economics FIW-Jahresgutachten UPDATE 2020 veröffentlicht FIW-Jahresgutachten - Update für 2020 und 2021 mit neuen Prognosen und Einschätzungen zur zukünftigen Entwicklung berücksichtigt ökonomische Folgen der Pandemie Die COVID-19-Pandemie hatte einen massiven Einfluss auf die internationalen Wirtschaftsaktivitäten und somit auf die österreichische Außenwirtschaft. Das vorliegende Oktober-Update zum FIW-Jahresgutachten „Die österreichische Außenwirtschaft“ vom Februar 2020 präsentiert eine neue kurzfristige Prognose für die Entwicklung der österreichischen Außenwirtschaft in den Jahren 2020 und 2021. Sie beruht auf Informationen über die österreichische Wirtschafts- und Außenhandelsentwicklung im ersten Halbjahr 2020 und auf internationalen Prognosen zu den wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen. Die Weltwirtschaft wurde vor allem im 2. Quartal des Jahres 2020 von den ökonomischen Effekten der COVID-19-Pandemie erfasst und wird in diesem Jahr um rund 4,5% schrumpfen. Ein so dramatischer Einbruch ist seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs einzigartig und hinterlässt aktuell tiefe Spuren in den meisten Volkswirtschaften der Welt. Da die Exporte stärker von der COVID-19-Pandemie als die Importe betroffen sind, wird der Beitrag der Nettoexporte zum gesamtwirtschaftlichen Wachstum somit im Jahr 2020 mit einem Minus von 1,3 Prozentpunkten relativ deutlich negativ ausfallen. Im Jahr 2019 war der Beitrag der Nettoexporte zum BIP-Wachstum mit +0,4 Prozentpunkten noch leicht positiv. Die Außenhandelsbeziehungen Österreichs tragen somit zum Teil zur gesamtwirtschaftlichen Rezession in Höhe von prognostizierten 6,8% bei. Die COVID-19-Pandemie trifft den österreichischen Dienstleistungsaußenhandel in einem noch stärkeren Ausmaß als den Warenhandel. Das nach wie vor große Ausmaß an COVID-19‑bedingter Unsicherheit im Wirtschaftssystem dämpft zusätzlich die Nachfrage nach Investitionsgütern, Maschinen und Kraftfahrzeugen. Diese Bereiche sind für die österreichische Außenwirtschaftsentwicklung auf der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Ebene maßgeblich und somit wird eine nachhaltige Erholung erst durch das Verschwinden dieser Unsicherheit erfolgen können. Neben den aktuellen internationalen Rahmenbedingungen und der kurzfristigen Prognose des Außenhandels beschäftigt sich das FIW in diesem Gutachten in einem eigenen Kapitel auch mit der Frage, inwieweit die COVID‑19‑Pandemie und die daraus folgenden Verhaltensänderungen auf KonsumentInnen- und Unternehmensseite (freiwilliger oder erzwungener Natur, etwa durch Einschränkungen der Reisefreiheit) nachhaltige strukturelle Auswirkungen auf den globalen und europäischen Außenhandel nach sich ziehen werden. Die FIW-AutorInnen greifen dabei die globalen Wertschöpfungsketten als jenen Faktor auf, bei dem mit Veränderungen zu rechnen ist und besprechen die möglichen mittelfristigen Verschiebungen in der Wirtschaftsstruktur durch den COVID‑19‑Schock. Description: Although increases in corporate ownership positions in foreign markets occur frequently, the factors that determine how quickly such increases occur are underexplored. Combining international business research on experiential learning, knowledge recombination, and pro-market reform, we hypothesize that a firm's international experience with ownership increases has a positive effect on the pace at which the firm implements an ownership increase in a host country, but that this effect is weaker during periods of quicker pro-market reform in the country. We find support for our hypotheses in an analysis of Austrian firms expanding in Central and Eastern Europe, suggesting that, rather than merely being beneficial to foreign investors, pro-market reform also poses a challenge to them. In this issue: * FIW Annual Report UPDATE 2020 published * Invitation to the 39th Foreign Trade Lecture * Invitation: Seminar in International Economics FIW Annual Report UPDATE 2020 published FIW publishes new study on the development of Austrian foreign trade Update for 2020 and 2021 with new forecasts and assessments of future developments takes into account economic consequences of the pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic had a massive impact on international economic activities and thus on Austria's foreign trade. The present October update of the FIW annual report "The Austrian Foreign Trade" of February 2020 presents a new short-term forecast for the development of Austrian foreign trade in the years 2020 and 2021, based on information on the Austrian economic and foreign trade development in the first half of 2020 and on international forecasts on the economic framework conditions. The global economy was affected by the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the second quarter of 2020, and will shrink by about 4.5% this year. Such a dramatic collapse is unique since the end of the Second World War and currently leaves deep marks in most of the world's economies. Since exports are more severely affected by the COVID 19 pandemic than imports, the contribution of net exports to overall economic growth will thus be considerably negative in 2020, with a minus of 1.3 percentage points. In 2019, the contribution of net exports to GDP growth was still slightly positive at 0.4 percentage points. Austria's foreign trade relations are thus contributing in part to the overall economic recession, which is forecast to amount to 6.8%. The COVID-19 pandemic affects Austrian foreign trade in services even more than trade in goods. The still large extent of COVID-19-related uncertainty in the economic system dampens additionally the demand for capital goods, machines and motor vehicles. These areas are decisive for the Austrian foreign trade development on the macroeconomic level and therefore a sustainable recovery will only be possible after this uncertainty has disappeared. In addition to the current international environment and the short-term forecast of foreign trade, the FIW deals in a separate chapter of this report with the question to what extent the COVID 19 pandemic and the resulting changes in consumer and business behavior (voluntary or forced, e.g. through restrictions on freedom of travel) will have lasting structural effects on global and European foreign trade. The FIW authors focus on the global value chains as the factor, where changes are to be expected and discuss the possible medium-term shifts in the economic structure due to the COVID 19 shock.
