It will incorporate regulations into a multi-country general equilibrium framework with firm heterogeneity and variable mark-ups. The research models regulations as a fixed cost that any firm selling to an economy must pay, consistent with stylised facts that are presented. It is demonstrated that, in the presence of variable mark-ups, the fixed cost generates a positive spillover effect on the rest of the world, as it induces entry of high-quality firms and it improves the terms of trade of the non-imposing countries. The author argues that the benefits of such regulations are not fully realised under non-cooperative policy settings, leading to a call for international cooperation in setting regulations. The research estimates the model and applies its gravity formulation to quantify the global welfare consequences of altering regulatory policies, the extent of the positive externalities across countries, the effects of cooperation, and the comparison with further tariff liberalisation. The analysis reveals that the entry of new high-quality firms, rather than changes in terms of trade, serves as the main quantitative driver of international spillovers. Oktober 2023 OUTLINE Der Forschungsscwerpunkt Internationale Wirtschaft kündigt seine 16. Forschungskonferenz „International Economics“ an und lädt zur Einreichung von (vollständigen) Workping Papers ein, die auf der Konferenz präsentiert werden sollen. Das Hauptziel der Konferenz ist es, Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern, die auf dem Gebiet der „Internationalen Wirtschaft“ arbeiten, eine Plattform zu bieten, um aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse zu präsentieren. Beiträge von Doktoranden, jungen Fakultätsmitgliedern und jungen Forschern in ähnlichen Positionen sind besonders willkommen, da die Konferenz junge Wirtschaftswissenschaftler unterstützen und ermutigen soll, indem sie ihnen die Möglichkeit gibt, ihre Arbeit sowohl anderen jungen Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern als auch erfahrenen älteren Forschern vorzustellen. Die Konferenz soll auch Forscher und politische Entscheidungsträger zusammenbringen, um ein Forum für Diskussionen darüber zu bieten, wie empirische Erkenntnisse effektiver in die aktuelle Wirtschaftspolitik einfließen können. AWARDS Es werden zwei Preise für die besten Beiträge zur Forschungskonferenz vergeben – der ‚Best Conference Paper Award 24′ und der ‚Young Economist Award 24‘. Jeder Preis ist mit 1000 € dotiert. Der ‚Young Economist Award 24‘ ist für Doktoranden, junge Fakultätsmitglieder und junge Forscher in ähnlichen Positionen bestimmt. Call for Papers | FIW-Research Conference 2024| Deadline: 06.10.2023 16th FIW-Research Conference ‘International Economics’ Vienna, February 22-23, 2024 Deadline for submissions: Oktober 6, 2023 OUTLINE The Research Centre International Economics – FIW announces its 16th Research Conference ‘International Economics’ and invites the submission of (full) working papers to be presented at the conference. The main objective of the conference is to provide a platform for economists working in the field of ‘International Economics’ to present recent research. Papers from Ph.D. students, young faculty members and young researchers in similar positions are particularly welcome as the conference aims to support and encourage young economists by providing an opportunity to present their work to fellow junior economists as well as experienced senior researchers. The conference also aims at bringing together researchers and policy makers to provide a forum for discussion on how empirical evidence can more effectively inform actual economic policy making.
