Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Wednesday, January 15, with Alexander Ahammer (Johannes Kepler University Linz) on Dying to Work: Effects of Unemployment on Health and Risky Behavior Using administrative data for a large sample of Austrian workers, we exploit an eligibility cutoff for workers and show that an extension in unemployment insurance (UI) duration increases unemployment length and impacts worker health and risky behavior. These effects vary by gender. We find that women remain unemployed three times longer than men, with a lower risk of heart attack or stroke, a reduction in opioid prescriptions, and a lower likelihood of filing a disability claim. For men, we find that longer unemployment leads to increases in cardiac events and antidepressant prescriptions. Across gender, effects are driven by low-skill workers and parents.
