Be part of the Idea-Hackathon to reinvent your digital student experience
by Herold, Sarina 07 Oct '20

07 Oct '20

Dear WU Students! Have you ever wished for an easier student life? Now you have the opportunity to participate in an Austrian-wide two-day Hackathon to shape the digital future of your university life by coming up with what your ideal University App would look like. Convince the jury with your idea and win 1000€ in our national Hackathon. The winning team will then take part in the global competition competing for 5000€. The word hackathon derives from “hacking” and “marathon,” meaning you and your team will be developing ideas to solve a given problem. No coding skills or technical experience is needed to participate! Just your experience as a student matters. The Idea-Hackathon, powered by WU Vienna in cooperation with the University of Graz and VetMed will take place on the 12th & 13th November 2020, and will be held 100% online. The challenge of the national competition is to: Reinvent the digital experience for students “Improve the students’ everyday life by leveraging the capabilities of a smartphone (app)” Throughout those two days you will not only become part of a worldwide changemaker community, but you can also expect exciting workshops with experienced mentors, who will support you in developing your ideas and of course, a lot of fun. No team? No ideas yet? No worries! We make sure you will be matched with teammates from our Hackathon community. You can choose to sign up alone or as a team. Ideation will be part of the event, so don’t worry if you don’t have an idea yet what the app should be capable of! For more information and to sign up for the challenge click here<https://digieduhack.com/en/vienna-improve-the-student-s-everyday-life-by-le…>! As the available slots for participation are limited, please only register if you are fully committed to engage in the idea finding process throughout those two days. The application deadline is 3rd November 23:59. The event is embedded in the DigiEduHack initiative under the Digital Education Action Plan of the European Commission. DigiEduHack is a series of online and offline idea-hackathons happening all around the world during two days, focusing on co-creating the future of education in the digital age. Liebe Grüße, Euer Learning Ergonomics-Team **** English version **** Dear students, WU wants to support its students' learning in the best way possible. Therefore, the initiative "Learning Ergonomics" offers a variety of free activities and suggestions around each exam-week. To get an idea of the Learning Ergonomics initiative, please have a look at the video (in German only). [cid:image011.jpg@01D6973D.34810C00]<https://learn.wu.ac.at/open/student-support/Learning_Ergonomics_Neuerungen> Maybe some of you have already attended one of our Yoga-, Meditation- or Pilates-classes in the last semesters? The specially designed exercise program enhances concentration and reduces stress and offers you a way to relax after an exhausting day of studying. Unfortunately, due to the current situation, we cannot offer the sessions on campus. But you won't have to forego the exercise program completely! To make sure that you can still rely on the Learning Ergonomics exercise program during study periods, we provide virtual Pilates<https://learn.wu.ac.at/open/student-support/event_0520> as wells as videos with exercises for a strong back<https://learn.wu.ac.at/open/student-support/gesund_studieren_0420> and a short and effective workout<https://learn.wu.ac.at/open/student-support/wussten_sie_schon_0420> on our homepage. The videos are in German, but still easy to follow. New free videos and a newsletter with suggestions for effective learning will be offered around each exam-week (starting in October). So far, all offers are in German only. [cid:image012.jpg@01D6973D.34810C00] Starting with the next newsletter, we would like to include your experiences and tips regarding effective learning. Therefore, we will publish surveys in advance and ask you to answer them. The results will be shown in the next newsletter. For a start, we want to question you about the apps and tools you are using to collaborate online. Please follow the link to the Learning Ergonomics club to find the short survey in German. If you have any further questions, please write to learning.ergonomics(a)wu.ac.at<mailto:learning.ergonomics@wu.ac.at> Best regards your Learning Ergonomics- Team

by Sausgruber, Rupert 29 Sep '20

29 Sep '20

Für die Anmeldung zur Informationsveranstaltung wenden Sie sich bitte an Big Brothers Big Sisters Österreich, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1200 Wien (mentoring(a)bigbrothers-bigsisters.at<mailto:mentoring@bigbrothers-bigsisters.at>, Tel.: 01 962 03 10), oder an Prof. Rupert Sausgruber (rupert.sausgruber(a)wu.ac.at<mailto:rupert.sausgruber@wu.ac.at>, Tel. 01 31336 4572). To help you plan ahead for the summer months, below we have put together an overview of the latest information and updates from the WU Library. Borrowing books If you only need to borrow books, please use our lending service<https://www.wu.ac.at/en/library/using-the-library/restricted-lending-servic…>. Exception: No books can be borrowed during the library maintenance period from July 20 to 31, 2020. Starting on August 3, 2020, the Central Library lending service will be available to you again. As of July 20, 2020, you can borrow and return books from the Library for Social Sciences in the D4 building again, from 9:00am–2:00pm (no pre-order or seat reservation is required). Returning books The LC building is open again and books can be returned at the self-service book return machine located to the right of the Central Library entrance during the regular opening hours (Mondays to Fridays, 7:00am–08:00pm). Exception: No books can be returned because of maintenance works from July 22 to 24 and on July 28, 2020. Scan service If you’re not in Vienna, you can request scans of excerpts from books or journal articles using our scanning service<https://www.wu.ac.at/en/library/using-the-library/scanservice>. Please note: Due to copyright restrictions, we are not allowed to digitize textbooks (not even extracts). Reopening of the libraries Do you want to be able to use the library as a place for independent work and studying again? Starting August 3, 2020, all three library branches will again be open for studying for a limited number of users. Seat reservations<https://www.wu.ac.at/en/library/using-the-library/seat-reservation> are required. Reservations can be made up to 7 days in advance. It is not possible to reserve and use the group study rooms and carrels (Central Library) until further notice. Scanner reservations in the D3 building The Library for Law will be open to students again starting August 3, 2020. For this reason, the scanner reservation service for WU students will be discontinued.
