In contrast to previous simulation studies which mostly considered semiparametric approaches relying on parametric propensity score estimation, we also consider more flexible approaches based on semi- or nonparametric propensity scores, nonparametric regression, and direct covariate matching. In addition to (pair, radius, and kernel) matching, inverse probability weighting, regression, and doubly robust estimation, our studies also cover recently proposed estimators such as genetic matching, entropy balancing, and empirical likelihood estimation. We vary a range of features (sample size, selection into treatment, effect heterogeneity, and correct/misspecification) in our simulations and that several nonparametric estimators by and large outperform commonly used treatment estimators using a parametric propensity score. Dear Colleagues, following an invitation of the Italian Economic Association to the Austrian Economic Association (NÖG), I am attempting to put together a NÖG-session at the 56th Annual Conference of the Italian Economic Association, to be held at Naples, Italy, 22 - 24 October 2015 (see attachment or http://www.siecon.org/online/en/56ma-rsa-napoli/) Therefore I invite you to submit a paper for presentation in this session on a topic within the general theme of "Macroeconomic Policies in the Euro Area after the Great Recession". Both theoretical and empirical papers are welcome. Papers dealing with the perspectives of Austria and/or Italy are particularly welcome, but any other topic within the general theme is also appropriate. If you want to present such a paper in Naples, please send the title and an abstract (or a draft paper) as soon as possible but not later than June 15 to reinhard.neck(a)aau.at<mailto:reinhard.neck@aau.at>. Decision about acceptance will be made shortly after that date. Beat Kappeler und Gerhard Hirschmann diskutieren in der Agenda Austria, welche Lehren Österreich aus dem Fall Kärnten ziehen könnte. Und welche zu ziehen wären. Die Kalamitäten rund um die ehemalige Kärntner Landesbank Hypo Alpe Adria haben nicht zuletzt die Frage aufgeworfen, wie Österreich mit vor der Pleite stehenden Bundesländern umgehen sollte. In der Bundesverfassung ist dieser Fall nicht klar geregelt, es gibt weder ein Verbot, Kärnten zu retten, noch ein Gebot, es zu tun. Der Fall Kärnten könnte nun zum Anlass genommen werden, die gesamte Staatsarchitektur umzubauen. Denn eines ist klar: Ein zweites Kärnten wird sich Österreich nicht leisten können. Dear Colleague, We cordially invite you to a seminar organized jointly with the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip) and the American Embassy in Austria Monday, 4 May 2015, 5 pm wiiw, Rahlgasse 3, 1060 Vienna, lecture hall (entrance from the ground floor) The US-EU Trade Agreement: Political and Economic Challenges and Consequences Bruce Stokes Director of Global economic Affairs, Pew Research Center Moderation: Prof. Heinz Gärtner, oiip Abstract The creation of a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership offer economic and strategic opportunities to both the EU and US, but it is not without its challenges. It has sparked criticism, with both EU and U.S. opponents claiming that TTIP may give too much power to corporations, especially foreign investors, and that it could undermine food safety and environmental standards. The seminar will focus on the political, geo-political and economic challenges, the possible impacts as well as recent findings of various opinion surveys on both sides of the Atlantic. Speaker Bruce Stokes is the director of Global Economics Attitudes at the Pew Research Center. He is also a non-resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and an associate fellow at Chatham House. He is a former senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he is a member. And for 23 years he was the international economics columnist for the National Journal, a Washington-based public policy magazine. He is the author many Pew surveys, including most recently: Faith and Skepticism about Trade and Investment; Global Public Downbeat about Economy; A Fragile Rebound for EU Image on Eve of European Parliament Elections; Support in Principle for U.S.-EU Trade Pact; Indians Reflect on their Country and the World. He is coauthor, with Andrew Kohut, of the book America Against the World: How We Are Different and Why We Are Disliked (Times Books, 2006), author of the 2009 GMF Transatlantic Trends survey and one of the creators of the Pew Global Attitudes Survey. In 2012, while at the German Marshall Fund, he co-authored A New Era for Transatlantic Trade Leadership (European Centre for International Political Economy, Brussels) and The Case for Renewing Transatlantic Capitalism (demosEuropa, Warsaw). In 1997, he was a member of President Clinton's Commission on United States-Pacific Trade and Investment Policy and he wrote its final report Building American Prosperity in the 21st Century. After an increase in money supply, consumers underappreciate the increase in nominal marginal costs and hence partially misattribute higher prices to higher markups; they perceive transactions as less fair, which increases the price elasticity of their demand for goods; firms respond by reducing markups; in equilibrium, output increases. By raising perceived markups, increased money supply inflicts a psychological cost on consumers that can offset the benefit of increased output. Spatial search strategies of job seekers and the role of unemployment insurance (Etienne Wasmer) Job search is an activity involving costs and returns. But, because individuals and jobs are scattered across space, it is also a spatially oriented activity. In particular, job acceptance depends on commute distance. Searching within a range of acceptable commute distances is costly: search costs combine effort and money, the latter part depending on the size of the prospection area. Under liquidity constraints of the job seekers, job search efficiency may be itself constrained. We first provide a simple theoretical setup to discuss those questions: job search is represented by draws in a bivariate distribution of wages and commute distances; individuals choose their range of search and the intensity of search within the range. We then exploit an administrative social security dataset covering all newly unemployed workers in Austria. It contains information on the current residence, the previous workplace and the subsequent workplace for those re-hired. We observe fairly high dispersion in the change of commuting distance and wage and evidence of a reservation frontier. We also see that newly unemployed workers seem to initially target their job search from the same workplace as they used to be employed. As the unemployment spell gets longer, they tend to accept lower wages and progressively enlarge their radius of search, ending up with a job farther away from their previous workplace (but not necessarily farther away from their residence). We finally extend the model to two types of unemployed workers and to partially directed job search to replicate these facts.
