Digitalization has changed the way businesses operate today and how they will be run in the future. Differences may lie in consumer behavior, firm behavior, and in the modes of competition. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on microeconomics with a specific focus on the digital economy. Candidates are expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field. Depending on the candidate's academic credentials, the employment contract can be concluded either as a permanent employment contract or as a fixed-term employment contract with the option of a permanent extension. Call for Abstracts Eighth ATHEA Conference for Health Economics “Status quo and new directions for Austrian health economics” Vienna, March 6th and 7th 2025 A decade ago, the first ATHEA conference on health economics, “The Breadth of Health Economics”, was held. This marked the beginning of a series of conferences that fostered closer collaborations between health economists from Austria and beyond. In commemoration of this milestone, the upcoming conference will once again serve as a platform to present and reflect on the progress made in Austrian health economics while facilitating a discourse on its critical appraisal and future directions. To this end, we invite all researchers in the field of health economics to submit their latest, cutting-edge research for discussion with their peers. As part of the conference, ATHEA will also organise a panel discussion to debate current and future challenges of data access for research in Austria and Europe. The panel will consist of researchers, data holders, and experts on data privacy law. Verein zur Pflege der Rechtsökonomik/Association for the Promotion of the Economic Analysis of Public Law – Joseph von Sonnenfels Center for the Study of Public Law and Economics Dezember 2024 Liebe InteressentInnen der Rechtsökonomie, liebe Mitglieder, (english version below) Zum Weihnachtsfest und den herannahenden Festtagen sowie zum bevorstehenden Jahreswechsel möchte ich mich namens des Sonnenfels-Center zunächst für Ihr Interesse und Ihre Unterstützung bedanken. Es ist selbstverständlich unser erklärtes Ziel uns dessen würdig zu erweisen! Als Folge des krankheitsbedingten zeitweiligen Ausfalls des Vorsitzenden war unsere Tätigkeit im zu Ende gehenden Jahr auf einige “Webinare” beschränkt. Aber für das neue Jahr bereiten wir wieder ein dichteres Programm vor. Die Webinare bleiben ein Fixpunkt in unserem Angebot. Zu bestimmten Schwerpunktthemen sind selbstverständlich auch Live-Treffen geplant, so etwa zum Thema Rechtsfolgenanalyse , aber auch zu Themen, die als Schlagwörter in tagespolitischen Diskussionen auftauchen wie Nullbasisbudgetierung und andere zeitgemäße Budgetierungstechniken. Regulierung ganz allgemein und für den speziellen Fall der Finanzmärkte verdient hier ebenfalls eine Hervorhebung, umso mehr, als diesbezüglich die Institutionen in Brüssel besonders aktiv sind. Angedacht sind kurze Einführungen in die Rechtsökonomie in Form von online-Vorlesungen “on demand”. Durch die Subskription einer bestimmten Anzahl prospektiver TeilnehmerInnen wird eine solche Vorlesung abrufbar sein. Unser Bemühen geht ferner dahin, eine Plattform für theoretische und anwendungsbezogene Auseinandersetzungen mit der ökonomischen Analyse des Rechts zu schaffen; das Medium für dieses Ziel ist eine Schriftenreihe in Kooperation mit dem Verlag Österreich. Zu diesem Punkt bereiten wir eine eigene Aussendung vor. Wir wollen aber auch nicht verhehlen, dass die finanzielle Lage des Sonnenfels Center nicht die beste ist. Wir tragen uns mit der Absicht, dem durch eine Bausteinaktion zu begegnen. Diesbezüglich werden wir uns in einem gesonderten Rundschreiben an Sie wenden. Die Mitglieder des Vereins zur Pflege der Rechtsökonomie bitten wir aber schon an dieser Stelle um die Überweisung des Mitgliedsbeitrages von € 20,00 auf das Konto des Vereins. Aber zurück zu den hauptsächlichen Anliegen dieses Briefes: Da ist zunächst unsere ausdrückliche Dankbarkeit für Ihr Interesse und die daraus fließende Unterstützung. And we would like to express our gratitude for your interest and support. Of course it is our prevalent aim to proof worthy to that! Due to the temporary unavailability of our chair because of his cancer – therapy our activities had to be seriously reduced. As a result we had to confine ourselves to a series of “webinars”. But for the upcoming year we are busy to offer an enriched program. To this end the webinars will be continued. But we also intend to organize live-meetings on focal topics such as regulatory impact assessment, or zero-base-budgeting and other contemporary budgeting procedures. Moreover the issue of regulation in general and with respect to financial markets in particular needs to be emphasized. Backing for the latter comes from institutions in Brussels which are particularly active in this field. We also consider a new service called “Law and Economics on demand”, encompassing a compact introductory lecture online, which will be delivered upon subscription by a number of prospective customers. Moreover we are eager to establish a forum for the presentation and discussion of both theoretical and applied research in our field. This should be accomplished by a series of professional publications in cooperation with “Verlag Österreich”. A special circular on that will follow. Finally we must not conceal the somewhat delicate financial situation of the centre! We intend to meet the actual situation by inviting support via financial building blocks. Once mor a special circular will convey the details of our plans. Back to the main concern of our letter we once more want to express our gratitude for your interest and the resulting continuous support. Remarkably enough in this district the economic analysis of law still is – if we may use this allegory - very much like a seedling which requires special nurture. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, January 8th, with Gregor von Schweinitz (Halle Institute for Economic Research, IWH) on "Fiscal Policy under the Eyes of Wary Bondholders" Abstract: This paper studies the interaction between fiscal policy and bondholders against the backdrop of high sovereign debt levels. For our analysis, we investigate the case of Italy, a country that has dealt with high public debt levels for a long time, using a Bayesian structural VAR model. We extend a canonical three variable macro mode to include a bond market, consisting of a fiscal rule and a bond demand schedule for long-term government bonds. To identify the model in the presence of political uncertainty and forward-looking investors, we derive an external instrument for bond demand shocks from a novel news ticker data set. Our main results are threefold. First, the interaction between fiscal policy and bondholders' expectations is critical for the evolution of prices. Fiscal policy reinforces contractionary monetary policy through sustained increases in primary surpluses and investors provide incentives for "passive" fiscal policy. Second, investors' expectations matter for inflation, and we document a Fisherian response of inflation across all maturities in response to a bond demand shock. Third, domestic politics is critical in the determination of bondholders' expectations and an increase in the perceived riskiness of sovereign debt increases inflation and thus complicates the task of controlling price growth.
