Dear Members, WU is currently inviting applications for the position of a full professor of Microeconomics and Digitalization at the Department of Economics. Digitalization has changed the way businesses operate today and how they will be run in the future. Differences may lie in consumer behavior, firm behavior, and in the modes of competition. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on microeconomics with a specific focus on the digital economy. Candidates are expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field. Depending on the candidate's academic credentials, the employment contract can be concluded either as a permanent employment contract or as a fixed-term employment contract with the option of a permanent extension. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, June 7th, with Arieda Muco (Central European University) on "The Xerox Effect: Communication Technologies and Political Actions in Autocracy" Abstract: Do new communication technologies promote democratic values in autocratic regimes? To answer this question, we use a unique setting: the distribution of photocopy machines, the Xerox program, between 1985 and 1989 in communist Hungary. Exploiting data on machine allocation combined with newly digitalized data, we show that areas with machines are more likely to support democratic values in the referendum of 1989. These areas are also more likely to participate in elections, vote for democratic values in the first democratic elections, and establish more entrepreneurial activity. Moreover, we show that adjacent areas are also affected by technology adoption. Our results suggest that new communication technologies can help promote democratic values even in countries where political competition is limited and traditional media is censored. Dear everyone, Daria Tisch will present her research "Implicit gender discrimination in inheritance and gift taxation" in the INEQ Research Seminar Series on Monday, 5 June 2023, 15:00, D4.2.008. Abstract This study examines how inheritance and gift tax systems may reproduce gender inequalities in parental transfers. Although there is ample research on the role of fiscal policy for wealth inequality between households, we know only little about how taxes shape gender wealth inequality. We focus on financial transfers because a significant share of wealth is not generated from savings but received in transfers. Gender differences in financial transfers might arise or be reproduced if men benefit differently than women from tax exemptions. This could be because men and women receive different types of assets where some are tax-exempted while others are not. To estimate gender gaps in the effective tax rates on parental transfers, we draw on German administrative inheritance and gift tax data. We show that men's average effective tax rate on inheritance is 2% lower than women's. For gifts, men's average effective tax rate is 18% lower than women's. By discussing and identifying implicit gender discrimination in the inheritance and gift tax system this study adds another factor - tax policy - to the debate about the gender wealth gap.
