The internship will allow the successful candidate to acquaint him/herself with the tasks and responsibilities of working in a research environment and to benefit from exchanges with colleagues on a wide range of subjects. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Wednesday, June 6, with Fabian Kosse (University of Bonn) on "The Formation of Prosociality: Causal Evidence on the Role of Social Environment" Abstract: This study presents descriptive and causal evidence on the role of social environment for the formation of prosociality. In a first step, we show that socioeconomic status (SES) as well as the intensity of mother-child interaction and mothers' prosocial attitudes are systematically related to elementary school children's prosociality. In a second step, we present evidence on a randomly- assigned variation of the social environment, providing children with a mentor for the duration of one year. Our data include a two-year follow-up and reveal a significant and persistent increase in prosociality in the treatment relative to the control group. Moreover, enriching the social environment bears the potential to close the observed gap in prosociality between low and high SES children. A mediation analysis of the observed treatment effect suggests that prosociality develops in response to stimuli in the form of prosocial role models and intense social interactions. An intensive course of gentrification in several urban regions of the EU-CEE countries produced an ever expanding housing crisis. As housing costs skyrocket, many locals are forced out of their original fields of labour or neighbourhoods, which is one important reason for ending up on the sex market of their home countries or those of the West. Local legislations tend to burden sex workers with difficulties, threatening them with excessive fining, persecution and the possibility of forcing their children into state care. DTTs cannot be considered a bilateral issue, but must be viewed as a network, since FDI can ﬂow from home to host country through one or more conduit countries. Accounting for treaty shopping, we calculate the shortest (i.e. the cheapest) tax distance between any two countries allowing the corporate income to be channeled through intermediate jurisdictions. We consider the relevance of tax treaties vis-à-vis the domestic law and the entire tax treaties network and show that tax treaties that reduce the direct tax distance, both against domestic law and the entire existing treaty network, will increase FDI. Such a relevant treaty will increase direct FDI by roughly 20%. The effect increases with reductions in the direct tax cost and we can quantify this effect at almost 8% for a 10-percentage-point tax reduction below the minimum rate in the network.
