Digitalization has changed the way businesses operate today and how they will be run in the future. Differences may lie in consumer behavior, firm behavior, and in the modes of competition. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on microeconomics with a specific focus on the digital economy. Candidates are expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar on Wednesday, December 1st, with Andreas Peichl (ifo Institute & LMU) on "The Taxation of Couples" Abstract: We present an analysis of the tax treatment of couples. We first investigate how marriage bonuses and penalties evolved in the US federal income tax since the 1960s. We then develop a framework for an analysis of Pareto-improving, welfare-improving and political feasible reforms of tax systems that treat singles and couples differently, and interpret the development in the US through the lens of this framework. We also extend our framework so that we can disentangle the welfare implications for primary and secondary earners. We conclude with an analysis of reform options in the contemporaneous tax system. We find that, on average, absolute advantage measured as productivity differences across countries within sectors explains 14% of the total variation in bilateral trade shares. In contrast, on average, comparative advantage measured as productivity differences across sectors within countries explains 43% of the variation in trade flows in the workhorse model. We also demonstrate that empirical productivity distributions entail quantitatively important micro-to-macro implications for marginal responses of trade flows to changes in trade costs, for gravity-type estimation of trade models, and for comparative statics isomorphism between the customarily parameterized models of international trade. We confirm the theoretical predictions derived under empirical productivity distributions in the data. It is a blend of narrative and selected in-depth analytics that intends to help readers obtain an insight into decision making in real time and staff’s analytical preparations of Governing Council decisions through the years. The material covered in the book has been one of the inputs into the just-concluded ECB’s strategy review. The first part of the presentation will give an overview of the book; the second part would zoom in on Chapter 3 “Strategy in Action” and focus on the trade-off created by the 1998 and 2003 ECB’s strategy, in which the policy aim was close to the price stability ceiling; the third part would focus on the instrument impact analysis of Chapter 6 “A Combined-Arms Strategy” and its extensions based on a new paper by the authors. The presentation aims at clarifying how school-to-work transitions might be addressed considering different types of complementarities and the related structuring process they exert on youth. The “bricolage” approach, highlights what are the main dimensions influencing the process and the challenges to be addressed. It also will show how educational systems, labour market regimes and other contextual dimensions are linked and produce differentiated opportunity structures. These might be producing or (re)producing inequalities and might require context-sensitive policies to break the vicious circles. The social investment perspective highlighting the importance of educational investments will be a fil-rouge of the presentation.
