The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on microeconomics with a specific focus on the digital economy. Candidates are expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field. [Workshop] How Smart Technologies Will Revolutionize the World

Dear Colleagues, we are pleased to announce the Workshop: How Smart Technologies Will Revolutionize the World scheduled for 16 to 18 June (online, Graz Schumpeter Centre, University of Graz). The Workshop is organised on the occasion of the forthcoming "Handbook of Smart Technologies: An Economic and Social Perspective" edited by Heinz D. Kurz, Marlies Schütz, Rita Strohmaier and Stella Zilian (Graz Schumpeter Centre, School of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, University of Graz, Austria). The Handbook is a result of a research project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (grant number P 30434-G27). The Handbook will be published by Routledge, London, this autumn. Participants in the workshop will be offered a 20% discount on the book. The workshop provides a thorough discussion of the most recent wave of technological (and organisational) innovations, typically called "smart" and based on the digitisation of information. This new wave is one in a row of surges that have shaken up and transformed economy, society and culture and have left a huge impact on how we live, think, communicate and work. The authors of the Handbook analyse the origins of the current wave; its roots in earlier ones and its path-dependent nature; its current forms and actual manifestations; its multifarious impact on economy and society; and the policies that help to ward off dangers and promote benefits. In short, they discuss the past, the present and the future of digitalisation and smart technologies. The Workshop will be held in digital format via Webex. Programme The programme is subdivided in six parts dealing with * Part 1: Disruptive technological change: historical record, economic analysis, methods and tools * Part 2: Smart technologies and work * Part 3: Smart technologies and social and economic transformation * Part 4: Smart technologies, governance and institutions * Part 5: Smart technologies and grand societal challenges * Part 6: Smart technologies: case studies A detailed programme will follow shortly and will also be posted online at https://smart.uni-graz.at and https://schumpeter-centre.uni-graz.at. A recent contribution (Berry and Haile, 2014) has suggested the use of exclusion restrictions to test alternative conduct models. We propose a pairwise testing procedure based on this idea and show that the power of the test to discriminate between models is tied to the formulation of those restrictions as moments and how they reflect the nonlinearity of equilibrium markups. We apply this test to the ready-to-eat cereal market using detailed scanner and consumer data to evaluate the “common ownership” hypothesis, which has received significant attention. Although we show that the potential magnitude of common ownership effects would be large, our test finds that standard own-firm profit maximization is more consistent with the data. Matt is Associate Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He received his Ph.D. from the Economics Department at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he focused on topics in industrial organization. His research interests include the determinants of firm-level productivity, estimation of consumer demand using data from auction-based marketplaces, and the role of cheap-talk communication in bargaining. Considering increasingly integrated global value chains, can economic complexity based on value-added exports better explain economic growth? Do value-added export specializations convey a different picture of economic development from a network perspective than gross export specializations? Approach: Using value-added exports and applying non-linear iterative algorithms, I introduce a novel empirical approach to the topic of economic complexity. Moreover, in analogy to the Product Space, which uses gross exports and maps products to each other based on required capabilities, value-added exports enable a complementary visualization of economic development and structural cross-country differences we refer to as Industry Space. Data: The latest release of the World Input-Output Database is used, which covers 43 countries and 56 industries each for 2000 to 2014. Main result(s): This approach leads to substantially different complexity rankings compared to established metrics using gross exports and the explanatory power of GDP per capita growth is considerably higher. Our study on the Industry Space emphasizes the need for value-added exports in analyzing economic development by providing evidence that using gross exports significantly changes the similarities between industries.
