Candidates are expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to an ad-hoc Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Thursday, October 7th, with Thomas Jungbauer (Cornell University) on "The Organization of Innovation: Incomplete Contracts and the Outsourcing Decision" Abstract: Why do firms outsource research and development (R&D) for some products while conducting R&D in-house for similar ones? An innovating firm risks cannibalizing its existing products. The more profitable these products, the more the firm wants to limit cannibalization. We apply this logic to the organization of R&D by introducing a novel theoretical model in which developing in-house provides the firm more control over the new product's location in product space. An empirical analysis of our testable predictions using pharmaceutical data concerning patents, patent expiration, and outsourcing at various stages of the R&D process supports our theoretical findings. Benannt ist die Auszeichnung nach Oskar Morgenstern, dem Mitbegründer der Spieltheorie, der bis 1938 Professor an der Universität Wien war. In diesem Jahr erhält die Auszeichnung eine hervorragende Wissenschaftlerin, die seit Jahrzehnten mit unserer Fakultät verbunden ist: Prof. Muriel Niederle Ph.D. ist Levin Professor of Economics an der Stanford University in Kalifornien. Nach ihrem Studium an der Universität Wien war sie am Institut für Volkswirtschaftslehre tätig und promovierte anschließend an der Harvard University. Muriel Niederle ist eine weltweit führende Expertin der experimentellen Ökonomie und des Market Design und trug mit ihrer Forschung zu Geschlechterunterschieden im Wettbewerbsverhalten maßgeblich zur Diskussion um Bewerbungsverhalten am Arbeitsmarkt bei. Martin Kocher, Bundesminister für Arbeit, wird die Oskar-Morgenstern-Medaille überreichen. Das zweite Highlight am Science Day 2021 ist die Verleihung des Österreichischen Ehrenkreuzes für Wissenschaft und Kunst I. Klasse an einen emer. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Franz Wirl durch Heinz Faßmann, Bundesminister für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung. Die Veranstaltung findet aufgrund der Covid-19-Maßnahmen in kleinem Rahmen statt. Although global population is still growing, an ever larger number of regions and countries are experiencing a decline in population size. Undoubtedly, depopulation poses many challenges from economic, social, political, and strategic perspectives. This conference aims to bring together researchers from around the world working on population decline and its consequences.
