Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to invite you to the SEA-NOeG Joint Conference 2026, which will take place on 11–12 September 2026 at the Central European University in Vienna. The conference, held jointly with the Slovak Economic Association, will focus on the theme “Economy and Democracy,” while welcoming submissions from all areas of economics. We are honored to host keynote lectures by Claudia Senik and Ruben Enikolopov. We invite submissions of full papers or extended abstracts, as well as proposals for organized sessions, by 7 June 2026 via the conference platform. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 5 July 2026. The conference will also feature a Young Economist Award and a dedicated Women in Economics networking event. Abstract We use population-wide Norwegian administrative data to construct a multidimensional measure of dynastic social capital—elite education, occupational prestige, organizational and corporate leadership, and residence in high-price neighborhoods—and examine how it is transmitted across generations. Social capital is strongly persistent across generations and strongly predicts children’s long-run earnings and access to elite positions, even after conditioning on parental income, education, and cognitive ability. Incorporating social capital into standard mobility regressions reduces estimated income-based persistence by more than half, indicating that a substantial share of intergenerational inequality reflects inherited social positions rather than financial resources alone. The influence of social capital grows over the life cycle and has a particularly large effect on becoming a top earner. Quasi-experimental evidence from adoption placements and parental lottery wins shows that these patterns reflect environmental transmission rather than genetic inheritance or direct income effects. Together, the findings reframe intergenerational mobility as a process shaped not only by inherited resources and skills, but also by durable social positions transmitted across generations. Traditionell zentraler Pfeiler wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung, ist der internationale Handel aufgrund von geopolitischen Spannungen, Protektionismus und strukturellen Veränderungen zuletzt unter Druck geraten. Die damit einhergehende erhöhte Unsicherheit wirft viele Fragen auf: Bleibt wirtschaftliche Offenheit eine Stärke – oder führt sie zur Verwundbarkeit? Welche spezifischen politischen Maßnahmen bzw. Yet major surveys elicit them without performance-based marginal incentives, despite their well-established importance to belief data quality in experimental economics. We show that marginal incentives raise effort and fundamentally reshape reported inflation expectations: lowering upward bias by 3.4 percentage points, reducing disagreement by one-third, closing the gender gap, and tripling learning rates in an RCT. Incentivized expectations are more consistent and better predict spending. Calibrating a simple New Keynesian model, we demonstrate that these differences matter: marginal incentives sharpen empirical inference and improve policy guidance - without increasing participant remuneration. This year's conference theme is “Monetary policy trade-offs in a heterogeneous currency area”. Monetary policy in a heterogeneous currency area faces inherent trade-offs because differences across countries, regions, sectors and groups shape both how shocks are transmitted and how effectively policy works. A single monetary policy action – such as adjusting interest rates – affects agents differently, stabilising prices and output for some, while potentially increasing risks to output, employment or financial stability for others. These variations generate multiple trade-offs: When pursuing disinflation, policymakers may need to balance the goal of lowering inflation with potential costs across sectors and regions. Conversely, a single expansionary monetary policy aimed at avoiding below-target inflation at the aggregate level may perpetuate inflation or create financial imbalances in some sectors, regions or countries. The tools available to central banks – policy rates, balance sheet operations and communication – are limited and cannot address all these trade-offs on their own. Complementary fiscal and macroprudential policies are essential in supporting the overall economy and managing sectoral or regional disparities. A clear understanding of heterogeneity within the monetary union is crucial for calibrating macroeconomic policies that support economies operating near potential, sustain inflation close to target and mitigate the risk of creating or worsening financial or economic vulnerabilities. This conference seeks to deepen our understanding of how heterogeneity shapes monetary policy trade-offs and how fiscal and macroprudential policies can complement efforts to achieve better outcomes. Bringing together policymakers, academics and financial industry experts, it aims to foster an exchange of ideas at the intersection of policy practice and academic research. The programme combines policy-oriented discussions designed to stimulate dialogue and analytical exchange with academic sessions dedicated to presenting and critically assessing new research.
