Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Wednesday, October 24, with Christoph Kuzmics (Karl Franzens University of Graz) on "Limit Orders under Knightian Uncertainty" Abstract: It is a well known fact that a large proportion of individuals do not participate in the stock market. Dow and Werlang (ECMA 1992) provide an explanation of this observation that is based on these individuals being ambiguity averse. More specifically, they show that an ambiguity averse investor's demand function for a financial asset can be such that for a wide range of possible prices of this asset the DM neither buys nor shortsells the asset, which is not possible for the demand function of a subjective expected utility (SEU) maximizing investor. The demand function that Dow and Werlang construct is purely hypothetical in that it is the truthful answer to the question as to what the investor would hypothetically do as a function of all potential prices. Suppose that we instead ask the ambiguity averse investor to submit a limit order, i.e., a function from prices to choices, before the price realizes and suppose we insist that all prices could potentially realize. I show that in such a model we either find that ambiguity averse investors, along with SEU investors, also fully participate in the stock market (in the sense of Dow and Werlang) or that SEU investors, along with ambiguity averse investors, also do not participate in the stock market. Ambiguity aversion can, therefore, no more and no less explain the observed stock market non-participation than the SEU model. Der Preis richtet sich an qualifizierte Wissenschafterinnen bis zu einer Altersgrenze von 35 Jahren, die ihre Masterarbeiten (oder Diplomarbeiten) an einer österreichischen Universität im Bereich „International Economics“ verfasst haben oder an österreichische StaatsbürgerInnen, die ihre Master- oder Diplomarbeit an einer Universität im Ausland verfasst haben Der „FIW Award“ hat das Ziel, hervorragende Masterarbeiten und Diplomarbeiten von Frauen sichtbar zu machen und zu prämieren. Frauen sollen damit motiviert werden, eine wissenschaftliche Karriere einzuschlagen. Die Höhe des Preises von insgesamt € 3.000,00 kann auf mehrere Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen aufgeteilt werden. AN ASSESSMENT BASED ON THE GROWTH ELASTICITY OF POVERTY FANNY DELLINGER University of Innsbruck and University of Vienna MONDAY, 22 OCTOBER 2018, 3:00 PM (15:00 CEST) wiiw, Rahlgasse 3, 1060 Vienna FIW-wiiw Seminars in International Economics [https://wiiw.ac.at/fiw-wiiw-seminars-in-international-economics-es-6.html] A new and simple approach on how to forecast and replicate poverty trends based on the growth elasticity of poverty (GEP) and the inequality elasticity of poverty (IEP) is developed. I use an analytically derived elasticity and combine it with data from household surveys, i.e. mean income, inequality and growth rates are all taken from household survey data. The novelty of the approach is twofold: The income distribution is approximated by the Fisk distribution and instead of National Accounting System (NAS) data only household survey data is used. I perform an illustrative ‘test’ of the model by replicating past poverty trends based on the survey data, and I find that the model generally performs well, except for highly unequal middle income countries. I then apply the model to forecast future poverty trends and to assess whether the first target of the Sustainable Development Goals, i.e. to eliminate poverty until 2030, can be reached in the different world regions. My results show that in East Asia, the target will most likely be reached. Also in Latin America and South Asia, poverty is projected to be very low by 2030. Oktober 2018 zu folgendem Fachvortrag von Herrn Prof. Peter Zweifel einladen zu dürfen: „End-of-life healthcare expenditure: testing economic explanations using a discrete choice experiment” Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Das ATHEA-Team [cid:image001.png@01D412E8.D37882B0] Einladung „End-of-life healthcare expenditure: testing economic explanations using a discrete choice experiment” Fachvortrag im Rahmen des 1. ATHEA PhD-Workshops Wien, 18. Oktober 2018 Healthcare expenditure (HCE) spent during an individual’s last year of life accounts for a high share of lifetime HCE. This finding is puzzling because an investment in health is unlikely to have a sufficiently long payback period. However, Becker et al. (2007) and Philipson et al. (2010) have advanced a theory designed to explain high willingness to pay (WTP) for an extension of life close to its end. Their testable implications are complemented by the concept of ‘pain of risk bearing’ introduced by Eeckhoudt and Schlesinger (2006). They are tested using a discrete choice experiment performed in 2014, involving 1,529 Swiss adults. An individual setting where the price attribute is substantial out-of-pocket payment for a novel drug for treatment of terminal cancer is distinguished from a societal one, where it is an increase in contributions to social health insurance. Rothschild und Josef Steindl<http://www.kurt-rothschild.at/sondersammlung/>, die 2014 mit der Eröffnung der Privatbibliotheken der beiden großen österreichischen Ökonomen ihren Anfang nahmen, wurden nunmehr durch die Digitalisierung der Nachlässe erweitert. Somit sind jetzt auch zahlreiche Dokumente wie Manuskripte, Notizhefte, Briefe und Lebensdokumente, in digitalisierter Form zugänglich.
