This paper examines how banks adjust their firm lending portfolios in a downturn by exploiting an unexpected unconventional monetary policy that reduced the cost of funding bank loans to a subset of firms in France in 2012. This cost reduction in the midst of a credit crunch raises eligible firms’ bank debt, and reduces both defaults on their suppliers and downgrades of their credit ratings, providing causal evidence that targeted unconventional monetary policy can be an effective lever to increase private credit and reduce contagion of financial distress. The effect is almost entirely driven by firms with only a single-bank relationship - a numerous and understudied group - and the positive loan supply shock we examine is transmitted to firms through banking relationships. We find that, for firms with strong hard information only, banking relationships support additional lending during a credit crunch. This work tries to measure to what extent increases in productivity translate into increases in compensations. While previous studies had investigated this relation in the case of the US, this work enlarges the scope of the analysis to a set of 34 advanced economies over the past half century. The results show on average a significant link between growth in productivity and growth in compensation, however there is no one-to-one relation, there is instead a significant gap. Cyclical conditions as well as labour market structures greatly affect this relation. These findings imply that policies aiming at increasing productivity are a necessary but not sufficient condition to achieve also appropriate pay growth, because other factors intervene to weaken the link between the two. Although this topic has gained more prominence in the US, the analysis shows that these findings apply to the EU and to other advanced economies as well. Der Preis richtet sich an qualifizierte Wissenschafterinnen bis zu einer Altersgrenze von 35 Jahren, die ihre Masterarbeiten (oder Diplomarbeiten) an einer österreichischen Universität im Bereich „International Economics“ verfasst haben oder an österreichische StaatsbürgerInnen, die ihre Master- oder Diplomarbeit an einer Universität im Ausland verfasst haben Der „FIW Award“ hat das Ziel, hervorragende Masterarbeiten und Diplomarbeiten von Frauen sichtbar zu machen und zu prämieren. Frauen sollen damit motiviert werden, eine wissenschaftliche Karriere einzuschlagen. Die Höhe des Preises von insgesamt € 3.000,00 kann auf mehrere Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen aufgeteilt werden. Insbesondere werden theoretische, empirische und wirtschaftspolitische Masterarbeiten und Diplomarbeiten in folgenden Themenbereichen gefördert: Internationale Makroökonomik, Außenwirtschaft, Europäische Integration, Internationaler Handel, Internationaler Wettbewerb, Direktinvestitionen, Migration, Internationale Wirtschaftsentwicklung, Multinationale Unternehmen, Entwicklungsökonomie, Globalisierung, Internationale Handels- und Finanzinstitutionen, Wechselkursregime und internationale Finanzmärkte¸ bzw. ähnliche Themen. The prize is intended for qualified female scientists up to the age of 35, who have written their master's theses (or diploma theses) at an Austrian university in the field of "International Economics" or to Austrian citizens who have completed their master's or diploma thesis at a university wrote abroad The aim of the "FIW Award" is to make outstanding master theses and diploma theses of women visible and rewarded. Women should be motivated to pursue a career in science. The total price of € 3,000.00 can be divided among several young female scientists.
