This paper studies the persistent producer price inflation differentials within the European Monetary Union. By applying a decomposition procedure within the input output framework, the drivers of sectoral producer price inflation in a representative sample of member states are re-vealed. We find that in the pre-crisis period (2000-2008) the inflation differentials in manufactur-ing and market services of all countries vis-à-vis Germany were consistently positive resulting in a loss of price competitiveness for all economies. Manufacturing and market service sectors of many countries continued to lose price competitiveness, though to a lesser extent, also during the crisis period (2009-2014). We observe that differences in unit labour cost developments across countries constitute an important driver, especially in the pre-crisis period. Dear Sir or Madam, The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) cordially invites you to attend the 2019 Forum on Globalization and Industrialization (FGI) on 19 November 2019 at the Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria. The event is the fourth edition in a series of annual forums jointly organized by UNIDO, Kiel Centre for Globalization and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel). It brings together policymakers, representatives from international organizations, academia and business to discuss the opportunities and challenges for industrialization as a result of countries' greater participation in global trade and investment flows. This year's Forum is titled "The Future of GVCs: How the Fourth Industrial Revolution Is Changing Global Production Networks". For several years, global value chains (GVCs) provided participating countries with a perspective for economic growth and job creation. This potential is increasingly put into question by technological advancements at the frontier. The automation of increasingly complex tasks in smart factories may have adverse effects on some of the countries that benefited from the outsourcing of labour-intensive activities by multinational companies. However, new technologies can also present developing countries with opportunities for learning and leapfrogging. In four panel sessions, the event will bring together world-renowned policy experts, academics, as well as high-level practitioners and business representatives to assess the effects of new technologies on the geography of international production. Panellists will also discuss the potential of established and new innovative industrial policies to support countries in reaping the benefits of GVCs in a time of rapid technological progress. In a special session, the role of infrastructure for GVC integration will be explored in greater detail. Registration for the event is mandatory. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Wednesday, October 23, with Paul Raschky (Monash University) on "Spatial Diffusion of Economic Shocks in Networks" Abstract: The aggregate economic impact of any project depends on its effects within the chosen administrative region as well as its economic spillovers into other regions. However, little is known about how these spillovers propagate through geographic, ethnic and road networks. In this paper, we analyze both theoretically and empirically the role of these networks in the spatial diffusion of local economic shocks. We develop a simple network model that shows how a district's level of prosperity is related to its position in the network. The network model's first-order conditions are used to derive an econometric model of spatial spillovers that we estimate using a panel of 5,944 districts from 53 African countries over the period 1997-2013. To identify the causal effect of spatial diffusion, we exploit cross-sectional variation in the location of mineral mines and exogenous time variation in world mineral prices. Our results show that road and ethnic connectivity are particularly important factors for diffusing economic spillovers over longer distances. We then use the estimated parameters from the econometric model to calculate the key player centralities, which determine which districts are key in propagating local economic shocks across Africa. We further show how counterfactual exercises based on these estimates and the underlying network structure can inform us about the potential gains from policies that increase economic activity in specific districts or improve road connectivity between districts. This resulted in a persistent and growing investment gap between cash-rich and cash-poor firms. The amplification effect of cash was absent in the period preceding the crisis. It was especially strong for young and small firms and in industries where rivals were financially constrained. The ability to continue to invest after the crisis allowed cash-rich firms to gain market share and accumulate profits. When observers note the disruption in this global order and ask what might replace the international system of the last century, many naturally try to gauge the outcome of the geostrategic rivalry between the world's great powers. Such analysis might be misleading for the final outcome, for it provides a perspective on only the supply side of the market for world order. The demand side – the international community of nations besides the superpowers – matters too. I show how lesser nations exercise agency and can help determine the new world order. Speaker biography This year’s Global Economy Lecture will be given by Danny Quah, Dean and Li Ka Shing Professor in Economics at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of the National University of Singapore. Danny Quah is renowned for his extensive research in the fields of economic growth and development economics. In his work, he has been focusing on large-scale shifts in the global economy, the new world order, the rise of the east, and poverty traps. Professor Quah is currently writing a book on “Ordering the World: Truth to Power.” The Global Economy Lecture is jointly organized by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw).
