Similar dynamical systems arise in optimal growth and macroeconomic models. These systems are often studied empirically by ad hoc methods relying on intuition from deterministic systems, such as looking for multiple peaks in the distribution of states. We show that in a stochastic model of poverty traps, multiple peaks may not exist, or may be very hard to detect and that some deterministic attractors are stochastically stable, while others are not. We examine the comparative statics of stochastically stable states and show how deterministic models give correct short-run descriptions of the model's dynamic behavior, but incorrect long-run descriptions. Larry Blume is Goldwin Smith Professor of Economics and Professor of Information Science at Cornell University, and currently VGSF Fellow at the IHS. This can become a valuable source of knowledge for firms in the process of internationalization. Relating to a Knowledge-Based-View perspective, this paper explains how the resource commitment of firms to foreign countries is contingent on immigration from those countries: Immigrants’ country knowledge reduces uncertainty and makes the governance of foreign operations more efficient. Moreover, this paper connects the relevance of knowledge for firm internationalization to institutional characteristics in immigrants’ home and host countries, both of which policymakers can shape. We test predictions on more than 13,000 observations over a 14-year period (2003–2016). The paper identifies economically significant contingencies of a positive effect of immigration, which are robust to changes in model specification, measurement, and sampling. The results indicate how immigration can shape firms’ investments abroad and have implications for developing policy as well as international business theory. Dezember 2019 um 11.00 Uhr Ort: Oesterreichische Nationalbank Veranstaltungssaal, Erdgeschoss Otto-Wagner-Platz 3 1090 Wien Abstract: This paper considers a class of GMM estimators for general dynamic panel models, allowing for weakly exogenous covariates and cross sectional dependence due to spatial lags, unspeciﬁed common shocks and time-varying interactive eﬀects. We signiﬁcantly expand the scope of the existing literature by allowing for endogenous time varying spatial weight matrices without imposing explicit structural assumptions on how the weights are formed. An important area of application is in social interaction and network models where our speciﬁcation can accommodate data dependent network formation. We consider an exemplary social interaction model and show how identiﬁcation of the interaction parameters is achieved through a combination of linear and quadratic moment conditions. For the general setup we develop an orthogonal forward diﬀerencing transformation to aid in the estimation of factor components while maintaining orthogonality of moment conditions. This is an important ingredient to a tractable asymptotic distribution of our estimators. In general, the asymptotic distribution of our estimators is found to be mixed normal due to random norming. Dezember 2019 um 11.00 Uhr Ort: Oesterreichische Nationalbank Veranstaltungssaal, Erdgeschoss Otto-Wagner-Platz 3 1090 Wien Abstract: This paper considers a class of GMM estimators for general dynamic panel models, allowing for weakly exogenous covariates and cross sectional dependence due to spatial lags, unspeciﬁed common shocks and time-varying interactive eﬀects. We signiﬁcantly expand the scope of the existing literature by allowing for endogenous time varying spatial weight matrices without imposing explicit structural assumptions on how the weights are formed. An important area of application is in social interaction and network models where our speciﬁcation can accommodate data dependent network formation. We consider an exemplary social interaction model and show how identiﬁcation of the interaction parameters is achieved through a combination of linear and quadratic moment conditions. For the general setup we develop an orthogonal forward diﬀerencing transformation to aid in the estimation of factor components while maintaining orthogonality of moment conditions. This is an important ingredient to a tractable asymptotic distribution of our estimators. In general, the asymptotic distribution of our estimators is found to be mixed normal due to random norming. [https://files.oenb-events.com/108-5263c54a6ed2b412ab6fba208d1c149e.jpg] REMINDER ________________________________ Dear Sir or Madam, we would kindly like to remind you of the invitation to the workshop organized by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) on December 2, 2019 entitled “How do monetary, micro- and macroprudential policies interact?” The global financial crisis brought to light the interactions between monetary policy and micro- and macroprudential policies and stimulated a discussion on how to optimize coordination and cooperation among these policy areas. The use of unconventional monetary policy tools has had an impact on banks and other financial institutions, whose effects need due consideration. In the euro area, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks (NCBs) have taken on additional responsibilities. All NCBs are involved in macroprudential supervision through the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) and are subject to top-up powers of the ECB; several NCBs act as national designated authority and/or macroprudential authority. In the same vein, all NCBs are involved in microprudential supervision via the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), which is organized under the ECB’s auspices, with many NCBs acting as national competent authority. In this workshop, we will discuss the following questions: * In what ways do these new responsibilities interact with central banks’ traditional tasks of implementing monetary policy, maintaining financial stability and providing large-value payment systems? * Are there any potential synergies in, for instance, information requirements and expertise, and complementarities, such as macroprudential supervision addressing potential negative side effects of monetary policy? * Where could conflicts of interest arise between these policy areas? In addition, we will investigate what the new responsibilities might entail for central banks’ independence and legitimacy, which have traditionally formed a cornerstone of the Eurosystem. In this context, we will look into new ways of safeguarding central bank independence in a transparent and accountable manner.
