In what direction trade diversification ought to take place is, however, subject to fierce debate. The Product Space (PS) framework (Hausmann and Klinger, 2007; Hidalgo et al. 2007) is a recent contribution in the economic literature that has proved very influential in policy circles. This is the ninth occasion for this summer school. The maximum number of participants is 20. The summer school consists of two weeks which can be taken independently. Alfons Oude Lansink THEORY AND PRACTICE OF EFFICIENCY & PRODUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT: STATIC & DYNAMIC ANALYSIS Summer School for PhDs and Postdocs, 2 weeks Week 1: 8 - 12 July 2019 Parametric Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (Subal Kumbhakar and Chris Parmeter) The first week uses Stochastic Frontier Analysis and semi-parametric techniques to measure efficiency and productivity by letting the data span the frontier to establish best practice. This approach coupled with the microeconomic theory of the firm provides firm-specific measurements of efficiency and best practice role models for improving performance. Week 2: 15- 19 July 2019 DEA and Dynamic Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (Spiro Stefanou, Alfons Oude Lansink) The second week introduces the students into Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the dynamic perspective to measuring efficiency and productivity. DEA is a nonparametric technique for measuring efficiency and productivity. The technique does not require distributional assumptions on the efficiency term and is a flexible approach that can be applied to many situations. Dynamic efficiency and productivity analysis is a relatively new approach that has found a more wide application the economics literature. The approach explicitly accounts for the role of adjustment costs in investments. Dear colleagues, The WU Department of Economics and DIBT cordially invite you to an ad-hoc Research Seminar on February 13, with Maarten van't Riet (CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis) on "Dutch Shell Companies and International Tax Planning" Abstract: This work uses the financial statements of special purpose entities (SPEs) for explaining the geography of dividend, interest, and royalty flows passing the Netherlands. These statements contain the country of origin and destination of these flows and the corresponding stocks. We find that Bermuda is the most important destination for royalty flows. The origins of these flows are Ireland, Singapore and the United States. For dividends and interest payments the geographical pattern is more widespread. We find a substantial tax reduction for royalties by using Dutch SPEs. However, we cannot find such tax savings for dividends and interest with an approximation based on statutory tax rates. Still, the geographical patterns are partly explained by the corporate tax systems. High direct taxation between two countries stimulates the diversion of financial flows via the Netherlands, if this leads to a lower tax burden. We show this by regressing the financial flows on tax variables, such as the bilateral tax burden between countries, the classification as tax haven and a number of control variables. Using data from 63 countries, we find a large and significant increase in horizontal minority shareholding acquisitions in the year in which a leniency programme is introduced, but only in countries with effective antitrust enforcement and low levels of corruption. We do not find a similar effect for cross-border or non-horizontal minority shareholding acquisitions. Our findings suggest that firms use minority shareholding acquisitions to stabilise collusive agreements.
