Dear colleagues, please find attached a Call for Papers related to the use of surveys for monetary and economic policy<https://www.suerf.org/econsurveys>. SUERF-Banca d’Italia-ECB-EIB look very much forward to your submissions! Please forward to interested colleagues! Kind regards Ernest Gnan ________________________________________________ Prof Dr Ernest Gnan Secretary General, SUERF – The European Money and Finance Forum Honorary Economic Advisor to the OeNB Governor ernest.gnan(a)oenb.at<mailto:ernest.gnan@oenb.at> +43 664 4333384 • @dr_gnan<https://twitter.com/dr_gnan> • LinkedIn<https://www.linkedin.com/in/ernest-gnan-8a6957ab/> • www.suerf.org<http://www.suerf.org/> [cid:image002.png@01D9056E.D3FB3F20] Call for Papers www.suerf.org/econsurveys<http://www.suerf.org/econsurveys> We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the SUERF-Banca d’Italia-ECB-EIB Conference: The use of surveys for monetary and economic policy<https://www.suerf.org/econsurveys> Motivation Over the past years, surveys have gained importance to supplement information from “hard” economic data on various aspects of the economy, and to provide timely insights on the impact of sudden and unexpected events, such as the health and the energy crises. Available surveys cover a broad range of economic actors and sectors: households, firms, financial institutions, and economic and financial forecasters. Central banks, policy institutions and academia are using insights from such surveys increasingly to inform policy decisions. That said, existing surveys also have many limitations, and their interpretations are often subject to caveats; moreover, survey methods and research are currently developing very rapidly, given a changing economic environment, with new pressing policy and research questions emerging at a rapid pace. SUERF-Banca d’Italia-ECB-EIB Conference • 26-27 April 2023 in Rome, Italy The conference will be held in person at the Banca d’ Italia, in Rome, Italy, with the option to participate online, on April 26-27, 2023. The event is scheduled for 1 ½ days starting from 26 April afternoon. Confirmed speakers include a keynote lecture by Professor Stefanie Stantcheva (Harvard University) on the use of surveys for economic policy and a high-ranking policy panel discussing policy perspectives with senior representatives from key institutions. Research papers in the sessions will be commented by expert discussants followed by Q&A. A detailed program will be released once submissions from the call for papers have been evaluated and selected. ________________________________ Call for Papers This call for papers invites original research – theoretical or empirical, academic or policy-oriented – on “The use of surveys for monetary and economic policy”<https://www.suerf.org/econsurveys>. Submissions should preferably take the form of full draft papers written in English. Papers may relate to surveys among households, firms, financial institutions including banks, and other relevant parties, such as market analysists, forecasters etc. Papers may, inter alia, focus on the role of surveys on topics related to: - monetary and economic policy issues; firms’ investment decisions and financing constraints; - unique and unexpected events (e.g. COVID-19, the energy crisis); - inflation expectations and perceptions; household consumption and savings decisions; - the effectiveness of central bank communication; as well as methodological questions related to survey design, biases, etc. The deadline for paper submission is January 27, 2023. Completed papers in PDF format should be submitted through Conference Maker<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/editorialexpress.com/conference/SurveyPo…>. Papers will be selected by a Scientific Committee comprising experts from SUERF, the Banca d’Italia, the ECB and the EIB. Authors will be notified by end-February/early-March 2023. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present their work at the workshop and to publish a short policy-oriented version as a SUERF Policy Brief. Authors should preferably present their papers in person; in exceptional cases, online participation may be possible. Authors affiliated with central banks and other institutions are requested to cover their own travel costs. Authors from academic institutions are eligible for a reimbursement of their travel costs. Scientific committee: David Loschiavo and Concetta Rondinelli (Banca d’Italia, local organizers), Ernest Gnan (SUERF), Geoff Kenny and Dimitris Georgarakos (ECB), Matteo Gatti and Peter Harasztosi (EIB). Further information about the content and application can be found at: www.suerf.org/econsurveys<http://www.suerf.org/econsurveys> We would appreciate it if you could circulate this call for papers among your colleagues and other interested parties. WU talks - Macroeconomic Policy in Times of War Can economic modeling save the economy? The Ukraine war has led to global uncertainty, increased inflation, and reduced economic growth in Europe. How should macroeconomic policy react to such global shocks in the context of growing uncertainty? What can we learn from macroeconomic models and empirical research? Can standard models deal with the situation and provide good policy advice? WU Economics Research Seminar, 7.12.2022, 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm, Karin Mayr-Dorn (University of Linz)
by Oberhofer, Harald 01 Dec '22

01 Dec '22
Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, December 7th, with Karin Mayr-Dorn (University of Linz) on "Trade diversion and labor market adjustment: Vietnam and the U.S.-China trade war" Abstract: This paper investigates the effects of the U.S.-China trade war on trade diversion and the labor market in a third country, Vietnam. We exploit variation in Vietnamese exports to the U.S. across industries and districts based on the extent of the unexpected and exogenous U.S. tariff hikes on Chinese imports and provide evidence of an indirect effect on labor market outcomes in Vietnam. Vietnamese workers and districts that are more exposed to the trade war display higher employment, working hours, and wages as a result of the U.S.-China trade war. Our findings reveal that bilateral trade policy can have substantial offsetting effects on trade flows and labor markets in third countries. Date: Wednesday, December 7th Time: 3.00 to 4.30 pm (CET) Location: building TC, 4th floor, room TC.4.13 With best regards, Harald Oberhofer --- Univ.-Prof. Dr. Harald Oberhofer Department of Economics WU Vienna University of Economics and Business Phone: +43/1/31336-4984 Email: harald.oberhofer(a)wu.ac.at<mailto:harald.oberhofer@wu.ac.at> Webpage: https://www.wu.ac.at/ie/mitarbeiter/harald-oberhofer/ Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) Phone: +43/1/7982601-468 Email: harald.oberhofer(a)wifo.ac.at<mailto:harald.oberhofer@wifo.ac.at> Webpage: http://www.wifo.ac.at/harald_oberhofer
