They are frequently used in support of the environmental protection, because of challenges posed by climate change, but little is known about the trade-effects of environmental measures. Relying on a unique and original dataset of technical measures notified for environmental reasons, we investigate their effects on trade patterns. We show that environmental measures naturally hinder bilateral trade flows, but tend to favour flows originating in trading partners with a strong economic and political influence, such as high income countries or members of the Group of 20 more industrialised countries, who tend to dominate the notification processes. This suggests that, while the objective of these measures is to improve environmental outcomes, they shape trade in favour of wealth and industrialised partners who have better financial and technical means to comply with requirements of technical measures. CINCH, the national research centre for health economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the dggö, the German Society for Health Economics, will organise a joint Academy in Health Economics focusing on the “economics of pandemics and risky health behaviours”. The workshop will bring together a group of junior and senior researchers to share a week of expert lectures, research presentations, and special sessions to advance our understanding of questions related to the economics of pandemics. Expert lectures will be given by Prof. Stefanie Schurer, University of Sydney, and Prof. Davide Dragone, University of Bologna. These lectures will focus on the economics of pandemics and on the economics of risky health behaviours. Special sessions include a “Meet the Editor” session with Prof. Kit Carpenter, Editor at the Journal of Health Economics, and there will be an attractive social and cultural program surrounding the workshop. Target audience: PhD students and early career postdocs working on health economics and closely related topics. Only 20 students will be admitted. Filip Novokmet (University of Bonn and World Inequality Lab) is presenting "Long-Run Spatial Inequality in North America and Western Europe: Introducing the Linking National and Regional Inequalities Project" Abstract The rise of populist politics has highlighted the increasingly polarized geography of prosperity, and the rise of national income inequalities has been increasingly connected to the evolution of spatial inequalities within countries. Whilst crossnational research on income inequalities has been highly influential, there is limited comparative research into geographic income inequalities that tracks the link over time between national and subnational economic inequality. This paper is a first systematic attempt to create internationally comparable evidence showing how different countries perform in terms of geographic inequalities. We create cross-country comparable measures of spatial wage disparities between and within similarly-defined local labour market areas (LLMAs) for Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States since the 1970s, and assess their contribution to national inequality. By the end of the 2010s, spatial inequalities in LLMA mean wages are very similar in Canada, France, Germany and the UK. The US is the most spatially unequal; Canada has US levels of national inequality with European spatial inequality; France has very low spatial inequality in top and bottom wages; place is unusually important in the UK; and place makes a low and stable contribution to German inequality. All countries experienced an increase in spatial inequality over the period, though the degree of increase varies considerably. The contribution of inequalities between places in explaining national wage inequality has remained fairly constant over the 40-year study period, except in the United Kingdom. Whilst common social, economic and technological shocks are clearly important, the variation in levels and trends of spatial inequality across countries and over time opens the door to comparative research exploring the role of national institutions in mediating how these shocks translate into economic disparities between places. The Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS) invites applications from interested students who will contribute with their PhD projects to the topic “Challenges of European Integration”. We invite applicants with research interests in (1) political science, (2) law, or (3) economics and willing to engage and cooperate with the other disciplines. Owing to its excellent faculty/researcher ratio, SCEUS provides a superb research environment. Doctoral students benefit from an international, multidisciplinary, and cooperative environment and enjoy close contact with and regular supervision from PLUS professors and visiting scholars. Benefits: The successful candidate will receive a gross monthly salary of approx. € 2,458.00 (14 x per year) according to § 26 in conjunction with § 49 of the Collective Agreement for the Austrian Universities. The position covers 30 hours/week and is exempted from teaching.
