Abstract The quality of the interaction between a teacher and her students can be assessed through classroom observations, in which observers measure the extent to which a teacher engages in classroom behaviors that educators and educational psychologists believe to be conducive to learning. Using an experiment where i) students are randomly assigned to different teachers in each year of elementary school, ii) students are tested annually in math, language and executive function (EF), and iii) teachers are filmed for a day (from which the quality of their classroom interactions can be measured), we estimate the impact of being sequentially exposed to different levels of quality of interactions during the first 5 years of schooling. We show that: 1) teachers’ quality, as assessed by the quality of interactions with students, impacts their students’ achievement not only in math, language, but also in EF; 2) these impacts are small but persistent; 3) impacts are similar across grades; 4) teacher quality is perfectly substitutable across grades. Abstract Beyond factors common to all euro area countries; the analysis explores potential factors specific to France that may explain the additional slowdown in labour productivity per employee in market sectors (excluding agriculture), relative to its pre-Covid trend (2010-2019). Drawing on recent empirical literature, this section introduces three key innovations: (a) it provides an updated and more precise methodology compared with previous studies, incorporating recent national accounts data; (b) it examines the sensitivity of the findings to certain underlying assumptions; and (c) it investigates the causes of the productivity slowdown at the sector level. Drawing on new data from the French national accounts (base year 2020 ), we analyse changes in apparent labour productivity per capita across sectors between the fourth quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2024. In order to assess accurately the contribution of each sector to overall productivity in the economy, these variations are analysed according to each sector's relative size. A special role from recent labour market reforms - in favour of more apprenticeships and labour market participation - is particularly discussed at the global et sectoral levels. Host em. o. Univ. The Vienna Circle and the Austrian School have shaped the development of philosophical, scientific, and political debate in the 20th century. In the 21st century, logical empiricism has undergone extensive re-evaluation, while the Austrian School experiences another revival. Yet, despite numerous connections and interactions between the two movements, their relationship has captured surprisingly sparse attention in the historical and philosophical literature. If an account is provided at all, logical empiricists and Austrian economists are portrayed as philosophically, scientifically, and politically antithetical groups. Among the most frequently mentioned contrastive pairs of catchwords are empiricism vs apriorism, formal methods vs verbal reasoning, and socialism vs classical liberalism. Acknowledging the existence of disagreements between logical empiricism and the Austrian School, recent scholarship has challenged the received view of antithetical opposition by reconstructing hitherto neglected compatibilities and similarities between the two movements. This workshop aims to advance historical as well as systematic discussions on the relationship between logical empiricism and Austrian economics. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Thursday, June 5th, with Tibor Besedeš (Georgia Institute of Technology) on "Experimenting with Ash: The Trade-Effects of Airspace Closures in the Aftermath of Eyjafjallajökull" Abstract: This paper attempts to quantify the effects of a temporary disruption to air transportation on trade using the natural experiment that forced cancellations to roughly one half of all flights originating and/or terminating in Europe between April 15 and April 22. The immediate impact of the disruption to flights was to cause a relatively small (8%) decline in US-bound air freight from Europe. The corresponding elasticity of air freight with respect to flight cancellations was about -0.55. Over the long-term, however, the impact may have been larger due to the persistence of trade, moreover some of the effects of flight cancellations spilled over by affecting air freight volumes between the US and its non-European trading partners. Partially offsetting these effects however were positive impacts on trading relationships, as US importers sourced alternative sources to countries to make up for the loss in European supply.
