Overlap and Interrelations Between (Im)mobility Motivations Fernando Riosmena, University of Texas - San Antonio Abstract: Scholars recognize that migration and immobility can be the result of various, mixed motivations. However, efforts to conceptualize and theorize on how and why motivations overlap or are interrelated are more scant, less explicit, and less systematic. I provide a broad systematic taxonomy of migration and immobility motivation overlap and interrelation. First, I describe the six main (im)mobility motivations invoked in the literature-namely economic, labor-related, safety-related, environmental, family-related, and related to self-fulfillment-organizing them around whether they are driven by extrinsic and/or intrinsic rewards and costs. Second, I provide a typology of possible ways in (im)mobility motivations become "alternative" to and/or concurrent with each other, and how these instances operate at individual and/or population levels. Third, I examine how the different motivations overlap/interrelate within 3 important theories of micro-level decision-making in the literature. About the presenter: Fernando Riosmena is Professor of Sociology at UT - San Antonio (USA). His work aims at improving understanding of theories, drivers, empirical measurement, and analytical strategies to analyze migration and immobility, focusing on the social, economic, environmental, and policy factors influencing Mesoamerica-US (im)mobility. Riosmena's research also examines immigrant health, aging, and wellbeing, using counterfactuals in sending areas and destinations to assess the likely impacts of migration, immigrant adaptation, and the processes driving race-ethnic disparities.

Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Thursday, June 26th, with Thomas Jungbauer (Cornell University) on "Strategic referrals among experts" Abstract: We study a dynamic model of referrals among experts that are horizontally specialized in treating heterogeneous problems. Demand for an expert's services increases in their reputation, a decaying record of their historic success rate in solving problems. Experts refer mismatched problems, trading off today's revenue with a higher demand tomorrow. In the unique steady state of Markov equilibria, the market generally neither supports efficient referrals nor optimal specialization, a problem potentially exacerbated by the adoption of AI. Our results suggest that regulation should allow for referral alliances and partnerships among small numbers of experts with complementary skills. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, June 25th, with Andrea Martinangeli (Université Paris 2) on "Externalities and the erosion of trust" Abstract: We present a theory explaining how divergent opinions about the regulation of an externality problem can lead to distrust of both political institutions and other people. Those who are more concerned about the externality distrust the government because they perceive the rule as too lenient. Those who are less concerned blame the government because they have to comply with a rule they consider useless. In addition, the rule shapes individuals' expectations of civic behavior in society. Therefore, regulation can lead to disappointment and interpersonal distrust when others do not follow the rules. Those who are more concerned also value civic behavior more, so they lose even more trust in others. Our survey experiment in four European countries supports these patterns in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. We consider an economy with one risky and one risk-free asset and explicitly consider the greenness of the risky asset as well as the risk-free asset. Utility is defined as the weighted sum of a prospect theory value function and an ESG score function. We derive optimal investment strategies, which depend on the relative greenness of the risky to the risk-free asset. We perform an extensive sensitivity analysis which provides properties of the investor's risk taking and the happiness with respect to reference return, loss aversion, ESG-scores, and the weight of the ESG score function. We show that the investment in an asset increases if the corresponding asset becomes greener. If the ESG score function becomes more important, then investment into the greener asset increases. An increase in loss-aversion decreases investment into risky asset. Finally, we observe that investment into the risky asset is first decreasing and then increasing in the reference return, as is often observed in pure prospect theory. However, some properties are different as demonstrated in a simulation study. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, June 18th, with Julian Hinz (Bielefeld University & Kiel Institute for the World Economy) on "When dispersed teams are more successful: Theory and evidence from software" Abstract: Who collaborates with whom when physical co-location is no longer a constraint? How does the geographic composition of teams influence project success? We develop a model of global team formation and collaboration in which individuals have heterogeneous and partially observable skills, collaboration incurs geographic frictions, and project success depends on the best idea developed in the team. The model yields five testable predictions: (I) collaboration is more likely among geographically proximate individuals; (II) only highly skilled individuals form long-distance collaborations due to selection effects; (III) geographically diverse teams produce higher-quality outcomes; (IV) the positive impact of diversity on success is stronger for more complex projects; and (V) there is a non-linear relationship between team size and project quality. We test these predictions using a highly granular dataset on open-source software development, where project success is measured through downstream usage. The open-source setting offers a unique empirical advantage: its transparency and absence of physical constraints allow us to isolate the role of team composition and collaboration frictions. Our findings confirm the model's predictions and suggest that the benefits of dispersed collaboration extend beyond software development to other knowledge-intensive activities.
