DA green 04 (Freihaus Building, 4th floor, green area) "Unequal life span and redistribution" Fabian Kindermann (University of Regensburg) (joint with Sebastian Kunz) Inequality in life expectancy across individuals is large, and it shows a strong correlation with income. But does this critical dimension of inequality, extending beyond income and wealth, call for additional fiscal redistribution? In this paper, we explore how systematic differences in life expectancy and health influence optimal fiscal redistribution. We propose a parsimonious modeling framework that allows us to immediately point to the mechanisms that shape the optimal fiscal tax and transfer system when individuals differ in their life expectancy. Theoretically, we demonstrate that heterogeneity in life expectancy alone prompts a utilitarian government to redistribute from individuals with shorter to those with longer life expectancy. However, if we consider that health status may also impact on the ability to enjoy late life consumption, this redistribution can be reversed. We then develop and calibrate a quantitative life-cycle model with heterogeneous agents that differ in income and health to study optimal fiscal redistribution through the pension system. Abstract Gender wage inequality is persistent across contexts and time, with women earning less than men, even when controlling for factors such as job role, experience, and performance metrics. Recent research has highlighted that gender wage inequality does not just arise from differences in base wages, but also from additional compensation. In this article we contribute to this literature by studying gender wage inequality in a specific form of performance pay: bonus compensations, that are handed out mostly at the end of the calendar year and are based on workers’ (perceived) contributions to firms. While studies have shown that there are cross-sectional differences in the extent to which men and women receive bonuses, we do not know where these differences come from: is there within-firm inequality in the extent to which men and women receive bonuses, or do women sort into firms where bonuses are lower (or less often handed out)? We leverage unique longitudinal data from the Dutch population registers (2013-2023) that allow for tracking all workers monthly and contain administrative information on all wages and bonus payments without censoring. Our preliminary results show large gender inequality in bonus payments, even among workers with similar wages in the same firm.
