Das bereits vierte Jahresgutachten wird am 21.02.2023 präsentiert. Darin wird neben der Darstellung und Analyse der aktuellsten Entwicklungen hinsichtlich der österreichischen Außenwirtschaft, besonderes Augenmerk auf die kurz- und mittelfristige Prognose von möglichen zukünftigen Entwicklungen gelegt. Dear colleagues, we cordially invite you to consider the attached Call for Papers: Annual Meeting of the Austrian Economic Association (NOeG) September 28-29, 2023, University of Salzburg “Economics in Times of Uncertainty” A war on the EU’s doorstep, skilled labor shortages, AI-driven automation, supply chain disruptions, high inflation levels and a looming threat of stagflation – the current economic environment is characterized by a high degree of uncertainty. This year’s conference of the Austrian Economic Organization (NOeG) aims to discuss the implications of this uncertainty on consumers, firms and governments, labor and financial markets, industrial organization, and fiscal and monetary policy. The organizers invite submissions of full papers on these topics as well as from all areas of Economics and Finance. Keynote Speakers Claudia Steinwender (LMU Munich) Maximilian Kasy (University of Oxford) Submission We invite full papers or extended abstracts on the conference topic as well as all other fields of economics to be submitted until May 1, 2023, via http://www.conftool.com/noeg-2023. Eine starke Dynamik in Richtung Asien ist vor - allem bei Hochtechnologieprodukten - schon vor dem Abschluss des Abkommens erkennbar. Jedoch ist eine Stagnation der Handelsbeziehungen im letzten Jahr zu beobachten. Es ist allerdings schwierig, die Ursachen für diesen Rückgang des EU-RCEP-Handels zu bestimmen, da viele Faktoren eine Rolle spielen. Mehr dazu im Spotlight. It examines empirically the contribution of such structural change to overall labour productivity growth. It presents a new dataset - the Economic Transformation Database of Transition Economies [ETD-TE] - of annual sectoral employment and value added data for fourteen former-Soviet Republics across the period 1990-2019. This dataset is built from scratch from primary and archive sources and is designed as a 'bolt-on attachment' for the GGDC/UNU-WIDER Economic Transformation Database. Stylized facts and shift-share decomposition analysis reveal that workers reallocated to less productive activities in the transition economies, but that this effect is concentrated in the first decade of transition. This finding is in contrast to other major world developing regions such as Africa, Latin America, and Developing Asia, which demonstrated a non-negative structural change contribution to labour productivity over the same time period Sub-regional analysis shows exceptions to the general trend in the case of the Baltic republics, which experienced growth-enhancing structural change throughout, and the Core countries of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine, which reverted to growth-reducing structural change in the most recent decade. The seminar series is organised by the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) in co-operation with FIW, the Centre of Competence in International Economics. A strong dynamic in the direction of Asia is evident even before the conclusion of the agreement, especially in the case of high-tech products. Though, a stagnation in trade relations has been observed over the past year. However, it is difficult to determine the causes of this decline in EU-RCEP trade, as many factors play a role. Abstract: Homemaking is an important precursor to children. However, housing prices in the United Kingdom have skyrocketed, leading to more young families foregoing homeownership and staying in private rent. Expensive housing undercuts the ability to obtain affordable, adequate, and stable housing, needed to have (another) child. On the other hand, homemaking and homeownership is an investment in the future. Couples preparing for children may view their housing needs very differently than those without fertility desires. In this study, I examine the relationship between household-level housing expenditure and the likelihood of first, second, and third birth. I find evidence that families invest in housing to have children. However, this is mitigated by other factors like women’s relationship with the labour market and overcrowding. The association appears to be parity specific, with negative relationship appearing between higher housing expenditure and second and third birth. Families being priced out of the local market, unable to find adequate housing, may delay additional children or ultimately decrease family size. About the presenter: Brian Buh is a research assistant on the BIRTHLIFE project at the Vienna Institute of Demography. He is a doctoral student in demography at the University of Vienna. He is interested in the competing and complementary life course, specifically around issues of family formation, employment, housing, income, and meso-level factors.
