Dear all, we want to invite you to our next ECON Theory and Policy Seminar talk on Thursday, October 20, 5:00 pm (Seminarroom DB04 yellow, Freihaus Building, yellow area, 4th floor) Mandatory Wage Posting, Bargaining and the Gender Wage Gap Wolfgang Frimmel (JKU) https://www.jku.at/en/department-of-economics/team/wolfgang-frimmel/ We evaluate whether revealing wage information in job vacancies is able to change the gender wage gap. In 2011, the Austrian Equal Treatment Law mandated every vacancy to include a minimum wage offer. This mandatory wage information makes the employer’s willingness to pay and the value of outside options more salient to job applicants, thus changing bargaining options. Our general results show a small effect of the provision of wage information, reducing the gender gap somewhat. Taking up the bargaining argumentation, we split the sample into vacancies where a higher or a lower bargaining power of firms is to be expected and find a strong and significant reduction of the gender wage gap for jobs which are immediately available and need to be filled urgently. The effect is driven by an increase in female wages. There is no such effect for jobs positions which are not urgently vacant. There is no evidence for changes in vacancy characteristics, meaning the estimated effects come from the provision of wage information rather than different job descriptions and amenities offers. We also show that effects are unlikely to come from changes in the composition of employees and firms as well as from increased returns to labor market experience. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, October 19th, with Francesco Venturini (University of Perugia) on "Returns to Innovation and Income Inequality: A Centenary Perspective" Abstract: This paper investigates the role of research productivity in explaining the evolution of income inequality in the last one hundred years. We develop a Schumpeterian growth model featuring an endogenous income distribution, which predicts that innovation impacts income inequality with two counteracting forces, a positive one associated with the increase in asset returns and a negative one related to the dissipation of innovation rents due to creative destruction. Using historical data for 21 OECD countries over the period 1920-2019, we estimate the long-run relationship between research productivity and income inequality and simulate the dynamic response of inequality to an institutional shock that facilitated international patenting and, hence, promoted the exploitation of innovation rents by firms. Our estimates reveal a strong, positive association between research productivity and income inequality, with the asset returns channel being the dominant mechanism of transmission. Dear colleagues, The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) cordially invites you to a research talk on October 20th, with Florian Huber (University of Salzburg) on “Bayesian Modeling of Time-varying Parameters Using Regression Trees” Abstract: In light of widespread evidence of parameter instability in macro-Economic models, many time-varying parameter (TVP) models have been proposed. This paper proposes a nonparametric TVP-VAR model using Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART). The novelty of this model arises from the law of motion driving the parameters being treated nonparametrically. This leads to great flexibility in the nature and extent of parameter change, both in the conditional mean and in the conditional variance. In contrast to other nonparametric and machine learning methods that are black box, inference using our model is straightforward because, in treating the parameters rather than the variables nonparametrically, the model remains conditionally linear in the mean. Parsimony is achieved through adopting nonparametric factor structures and use of shrinkage priors. In an application to US macroeconomic data, we illustrate the use of our model in tracking both the evolving nature of the Phillips curve and how the effects of business cycle shocks on inflationary measures vary nonlinearly with movements in uncertainty. To reach the target of the Paris Agreement, it may be necessary to link trade and environmental policy, whereby one way of linking the two policy areas is to include environmental provisions (EPs) in trade agreements. Several motives for including environmental concerns in trade agreements exist, ranging from promoting environmental cooperation and ensuring a level playing field to pursuing protectionist interests. In principle, the inclusion of environmental aspects is not a new development. Since the 1990s, EPs have been frequently integrated into trade agreements, for example on issues such as hazardous waste, deforestation or biodiversity protection. In recent years, as climate initiatives have gained prominence at the EU level, the number of EPs in trade agreements has steadily increased. Thereby, the inclusion of these concerns is very heterogeneous in terms of the subject matter and enforceability. A closer look at the enforceability indicator is crucial, because if EPs are not legally enforceable, addressing environmental concerns may not have an impact on trade and the environment. The European Commission is aware of this issue and therefore published the review of its policy chapter on trade and sustainable development in June 2022. This identifies how the contribution of EU trade agreements to promoting environmental protection can be improved, mentioning, among other actions, the strengthening of enforcement through trade sanctions as a last resort. Whether the current changes are effective in terms of environmental and trade impacts will be seen in further research. Dear colleagues, Please save the date for the upcoming WIC-Colloquium: Onsite only - WIC Colloquium ************************* Anette Baudisch, University of Southern Denmark Future Directions for (Cross-disciplinary) Collaborations in Demography Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 10:00-11:00 (CEST) Venue: ÖAW, Dr. Ignaz Seipel - Platz 2, 1010 Wien, Sitzungssaal, 1st floor Abstract The purpose of this colloquium is twofold. First, to communicate new directions of research at the Danish Center for Population Research in Odense to explore potential areas of common interest with researchers at WIC. These include, among others, research on fertility, regional demography, and the interplay between demography and climate change. And second, to present recent results on mortality patterns and the rate of aging in humans, primates, and other species to discuss if and how existing theories and modeling within evolutionary demography, optimization approaches across disciplines and other approaches may help explain emerging regularities and apparent constraints on the rate of aging.

Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, October 12th, with David de la Croix (UCLouvain) on "Nepotism vs. Intergenerational Transmission of Human Capital in Academia (1088-1800)" Abstract: We build a comprehensive database of father-son pairs in academia, measure their publications, and develop a general method to disentangle two determinants of occupational persistence: nepotism vs. inherited human capital. This requires jointly addressing measurement error in human capital and selection from nepotism. Exploiting multi-generation correlations and parent-child distributional differences, we identify the structural parameters of a Markov process of intergenerational transmission with nepotism. The human capital elasticity is lower than in standard multi-generation estimates ignoring nepotism. Nepotism was lower in science vs. law, in Protestant institutions, and declined during the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment, testifying to the rise of meritocracy.
