Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar on Wednesday, October 27th, with Daniel Oto-Peralías (Universidad Pablo de Olavide) on "Delegating Governmental Authority to Private Actors: Lordships, State Capacity and Development" Abstract: This paper investigates the consequences of delegation of governmental authority through the study of a pivotal local political institution in historical Europe: the lordship. I collect data on seigneurial jurisdictions for ancien-regime Spain and document a negative relationship between having been a seigneurial town in the 18th century and current economic development. To shed light on the causal effect, I focus on the distribution of lordships in the former Kingdom of Granada after its conquest by the Catholic Monarchs, which can be considered as conditionally random. The results confirm the negative effect of lordship found for the whole country: towns that shortly after the conquest were granted to nobles are relatively poorer today. In addition, I explore the mechanisms of persistence, with the results pointing to lower state capacity as a main explanatory factor. This finding is consistent with an interpretation of seigneurial jurisdictions as a privatization of the local government, which has historically hindered the application of central government policies and lowered the state's infrastructural capacity in former manorial towns. Approach: This talk will give an overview over psychological research on job insecurity and its multiple consequences for individuals. It will focus foremostly on perceived subjective job insecurity embedded in an economic and regional context and offer psychological models to better understand its consequences. Data: The talk will mostly draw on longitudinal quantitative surveys conducted among employees of different occupations and with different levels of job insecurity. It will also include findings of country-level/regional surveys and experimental studies to highlight the contextual influence on individual perception. Issues of endogeneity will be discussed. Main result(s): Subjectively perceived job insecurity has mainly detrimental health and organizational behavioral outcomes, and certainly no motivational potential. Moreover, due to its identity threatening aspect, job insecurity can affect outcomes also outside work, including political attitudes and tolerance towards others. Policy implication(s): Policy makers need to be aware that a rise in perceived job insecurity will bring detrimental health and performance consequences, and might also undermine people's political attitudes and trust in the state over the longer term. Dr(habil.) Eva Selenko is a Senior Lecturer in Work Psychology at Loughborough University, UK. She holds an MSc in Social Psychology from the University of Groningen (NL) and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Graz. After starting her career at the University of Linz, Eva has been living and working in the UK since 2013. Evas' research centers around precarious working conditions and their effect on people's work related identities, their well-being and work-, career- and political behavior. Starting from the premise that work is an important part of who we are, Eva investigates what happens to peoples' identity if work becomes insecure, difficult to get or changes dramatically. Eva has published prolifically in world-leading journals and acts as associate editor for Applied Psychology: An International Review. As research associate for Cumberland Lodge she was responsible for a policy briefing on working identities for Westminster; currently she is contributing to the European Association of Work and Organisational Psychology knowledge exchange on the living wage.
