The model quantifies their impact on productivity, GDP and welfare. Firms draw idiosyncratic shocks, invest in capital, choose optimal financing and select endogenously into servicing an overseas market, either through exporting or FDI. I apply this framework to the removal of the U.S. repatriation tax, an aspect of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The reform’s impact trades-off two selection effects — more offshoring versus greater business dynamism from increased profitability. The reform leads to higher U.S. welfare and revenue neutrality. A series of exercises illustrate that the novel features of this framework have significant quantitative implications. The reform’s beneficial effects are mitigated considerably when financial frictions are removed and it appears to be welfare reducing when using a static analogue of the model. Have family policies contributed to the decline or the stalling of gender inequalities? Using a sequence of family policy reforms that took place in Austria, we show that neither the generosity of parental leave rules nor the availability of public child care (and the interaction between the two) had an impact on "child penalties", the earnings reduction experienced by mothers - relative to fathers - after the birth of their first child. This null result is estimated rather precisely and is robust to equilibrium or fertility effects. Access to the session: Microsoft Teams<https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3a3d7f0abb06a147d39345ba1ae669…> Hans JLW van Kippersluis<https://www.eur.nl/people/hans-van-kippersluis> (Erasmus School of Economics) will present: Dynamic complementarity in skill production: evidence from genes and birth order ABSTRACT: Genetic variation is randomly distributed between siblings while, conditional on family size, birth order creates exogenous variation in the environment that siblings are exposed to. Previous studies have consistently shown a negative relationship between birth order and educational attainment, mainly thought to be driven by parental time investments. Thus investigating whether genetic endowments interact with birth order in a sample of siblings enables us to shed light on how a natural reduction in the parental time constraint differentially affects children with different genetic endowments. Our within-family analysis first confirms the long-held conjecture that genetic endowments do not differ across birth parity. Hence, by definition, birth order effects must be due to ensuing environmental influences. Our key finding is that birth order and genetic endowments interact: being first born shows a positive interaction with higher genetic endowments for education. As such, these results provide support for dynamic complementary in skill production: initial skills raise the productivity of later investments, with children with higher (genetic) endowments benefitting the most from parental investments. Hans van Kippersluis is a Professor of Applied Economics. He has used both theoretical and empirical approaches to study topics in health and human capital formation: (i) how do different components of human capital (e.g., education, health) relate to each other and interact with each other (e.g., why are higher educated individuals healthier than lower educated? Why do rich people smoke less?); (ii) What are the genetic and environmental determinants of education and health?, and (iii) What is the effect of public policies on education and health? Current projects include investigating the interplay between genes and the environment in producing inequalities in education and health outcomes, developing and testing incentives to encourage healthy behavior, and investigating the impact of public policies on health, education and labor supply decisions. The Avant smart card system created by the Bank of Finland in the 1990’s can be considered the world’s first CBDC and the only one so far that has gone into production. Avant cards were based on smart card technology similar to that used in debit and credit cards today. Even though the system was initiated, developed, and for the first few years operated by the central bank, it was eventually spun off and sold to commercial banks. Once debit cards be-came less expensive and were upgraded to use smart card technology, Avant became obsolete and was shut down. The story of Avant can give us valuable insight contributing to the ongoing discussion regarding CBDC. We take a comprehensive view and include not only direct taxation and cash benefits but also indirect taxes and in-kind transfers. We look at two kinds of redistribution: between households belonging to different income groups, and between generations, taking a life-cycle perspective. We find that the inequality-enhancing effect of indirect taxes is more than offset by the inequality-reducing effect of in-kind benefits. The Gini coefficient increases from 0.24 to 0.26 due to indirect taxes, but when adding in-kind benefits, it is reduced to 0.23. The overall effect of both indirect taxes and in-kind benefits is therefore progressive. When looking at the impact of indirect taxes and in-kind benefits by generations, we find substantial redistribution in the current system. Our analysis highlights the importance of considering both indirect taxation and in-kind benefits, in a comprehensive analysis of the welfare state. Since in-kind benefits and indirect taxes can vary substantially across countries, both might have a substantial impact on cross-country comparisons of the redistributional impact of welfare states. Evidence from Dyadic News Data http://www.econ.jku.at/t3/veranstaltungen/research_seminar/papers/fetzer.pdf Abstract: This paper uses novel data to show how the media amplifies the economic impact of newsworthy events - the media multiplier. Specifically, we combine monthly aggregated and anonymized card spending data from 114 card issuing countries in 5 destination countries (Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Israel and Morocco) with a large corpus of news coverage of violent events in these destinations. To define and quantify the media multiplier we estimate a model of how media coverage helps shape beliefs about risks. When a country is perceived as dangerous by all potential visitors, aggregate spending falls by 53 percent with more than half of this effect due to the media multiplier. Evidence from 60 Years of Policy Experimentation" Abstract: Over the past decades, many countries have experienced a strong decline in gender inequality through higher female labor force participation and smaller gender earnings gaps. Have family policies contributed to the decline or the stalling of gender inequalities? Using a sequence of family policy reforms that took place in Austria, we show that neither the generosity of parental leave rules nor the availability of public child care (and the interaction between the two) had an impact on "child penalties", the earnings reduction experienced by mothers - relative to fathers - after the birth of their first child. This null result is estimated rather precisely and is robust to equilibrium or fertility effects. Ory Professor of Economics at Harvard University. Pol Antràs’s research interests are in the areas of international economics and applied theory. In his most recent work, he analyzed global value chains and the interplay between trade, inequality and costly redistribution. The 2020 Global Economy Lecture will focus on the relationship between globalization and pandemics. On the one hand, deepening global integration can lead to multiple waves of infections, whereas, in a closed economy, only a single wave would occur. On the other hand, a pandemic may have a lasting impact on global value chains. Even though the growth of international trade flows has slowed down since the Great Recession, there is little systematic evidence for an era of de-globalization. The main challenge for the future of globalization is institutional and political in nature rather than technological. If it aggravates policy tensions across countries, the current health crisis may darken the prospects of globalization.
