Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Wednesday, December 11, with Petra Sauer (Luxembourg Institute for Socio-Economic Research) on Do Migrants Have Access to Decent Work? Having a paid and decent job has been one of the most defining features of personal life since the emergence of wage labour during the Great Industrial Revolution. Being employed is not only a source of financial means, but it also affects social status, self-esteem, and is generally associated with establishing own identities. The relevance of decent working conditions for individual well-being as well as for the society as a whole has been well-established by various disciplines showing that the quality of work matters for a range of outcomes related to financial, social as well as mental and physical health aspects, among others. Yet, migrants have been shown to often find themselves trapped in labour market segments which don't secure access to decent work, endangering the integrative function of work. In this paper we conduct an integrated analysis of the multiple dimensions of work quality that affect the integration of migrants in European labour markets. Theoretically, our analysis is based on the perception of contemporary labour markets being segmented along various social, cultural and economic lines. This new segmentation-theory approach enables to understand why population groups are simultaneously disadvantaged along multiple dimensions of work quality. Moreover, the vast institutional, political as well as scientific contributions that have aimed at conceptualising work quality since the 1960s and 1970s build the basis of the 7 dimensions of work quality we consider in our empirical analysis, i.e. skills, autonomy, social environment, decent work intensity, employment quality, and pay. To quantify each dimension, we use the Adult Skills Survey (PIIAC). Comparatively analysing job quality across 16 European countries enables us to identify the characteristics of labour market segments in which migrants work, and to provide insights into the lines of discrimination that go beyond pay differentials. Building on the descriptive analysis, we use an ordered probit model in order to establish a causal relation between migration background, gender and work quality, controlling for confounding factors at the individual and at the industry level. Similar dynamical systems arise in optimal growth and macroeconomic models. These systems are often studied empirically by ad hoc methods relying on intuition from deterministic systems, such as looking for multiple peaks in the distribution of states. We show that in a stochastic model of poverty traps, multiple peaks may not exist, or may be very hard to detect and that some deterministic attractors are stochastically stable, while others are not. We examine the comparative statics of stochastically stable states and show how deterministic models give correct short-run descriptions of the model's dynamic behavior, but incorrect long-run descriptions. This can become a valuable source of knowledge for firms in the process of internationalization. Relating to a Knowledge-Based-View perspective, this paper explains how the resource commitment of firms to foreign countries is contingent on immigration from those countries: Immigrants’ country knowledge reduces uncertainty and makes the governance of foreign operations more efficient. Moreover, this paper connects the relevance of knowledge for firm internationalization to institutional characteristics in immigrants’ home and host countries, both of which policymakers can shape. We test predictions on more than 13,000 observations over a 14-year period (2003–2016). The paper identifies economically significant contingencies of a positive effect of immigration, which are robust to changes in model specification, measurement, and sampling. The results indicate how immigration can shape firms’ investments abroad and have implications for developing policy as well as international business theory. Dezember 2019 um 11.00 Uhr Ort: Oesterreichische Nationalbank Veranstaltungssaal, Erdgeschoss Otto-Wagner-Platz 3 1090 Wien Abstract: This paper considers a class of GMM estimators for general dynamic panel models, allowing for weakly exogenous covariates and cross sectional dependence due to spatial lags, unspeciﬁed common shocks and time-varying interactive eﬀects. We signiﬁcantly expand the scope of the existing literature by allowing for endogenous time varying spatial weight matrices without imposing explicit structural assumptions on how the weights are formed. An important area of application is in social interaction and network models where our speciﬁcation can accommodate data dependent network formation. We consider an exemplary social interaction model and show how identiﬁcation of the interaction parameters is achieved through a combination of linear and quadratic moment conditions. For the general setup we develop an orthogonal forward diﬀerencing transformation to aid in the estimation of factor components while maintaining orthogonality of moment conditions. This is an important ingredient to a tractable asymptotic distribution of our estimators. In general, the asymptotic distribution of our estimators is found to be mixed normal due to random norming. Similar dynamical systems arise in optimal growth and macroeconomic models. These systems are often studied empirically by ad hoc methods relying on intuition from deterministic systems, such as looking for multiple peaks in the distribution of states. We show that in a stochastic model of poverty traps, multiple peaks may not exist, or may be very hard to detect and that some deterministic attractors are stochastically stable, while others are not. We examine the comparative statics of stochastically stable states and show how deterministic models give correct short-run descriptions of the model's dynamic behavior, but incorrect long-run descriptions. Dezember 2019 um 11.00 Uhr Ort: Oesterreichische Nationalbank Veranstaltungssaal, Erdgeschoss Otto-Wagner-Platz 3 1090 Wien Abstract: This paper considers a class of GMM estimators for general dynamic panel models, allowing for weakly exogenous covariates and cross sectional dependence due to spatial lags, unspeciﬁed common shocks and time-varying interactive eﬀects. We signiﬁcantly expand the scope of the existing literature by allowing for endogenous time varying spatial weight matrices without imposing explicit structural assumptions on how the weights are formed. An important area of application is in social interaction and network models where our speciﬁcation can accommodate data dependent network formation. We consider an exemplary social interaction model and show how identiﬁcation of the interaction parameters is achieved through a combination of linear and quadratic moment conditions. For the general setup we develop an orthogonal forward diﬀerencing transformation to aid in the estimation of factor components while maintaining orthogonality of moment conditions. This is an important ingredient to a tractable asymptotic distribution of our estimators. In general, the asymptotic distribution of our estimators is found to be mixed normal due to random norming.
