Abstract: In high-income economies, the cross-country relationship between women's labor force participation and fertility has reversed in recent decades: countries where many women work used to have fewer children, but now they have more. In this paper, we examine the role of bargaining frictions in the household in accounting for this reversal. We develop a model in which partners bargain over how many children to have under limited commitment. Frictions arise because having children changes outside options. Bargaining frictions are large, and fertility is low, if mothers provide the majority of childcare while giving up lucrative career opportunities to raise children. In a simple setting, the bargaining friction is proportional to the marginal child penalty. When the only alternative for women is to raise children or to work, the relationship between women's labor supply and fertility is negative. When women's labor market opportunities are sufficiently attractive that market childcare is used, the relationship reverses. The circadian rhythm of births and his connections with meteorological factors Alessio Fornasin, University of Udine Abstract: The aim of the presentation is to evaluate the influences exerted by temperature on the circadian rhythm of births. In the past, births occurred mainly between midnight and dawn, while today births tend to be less frequent during the night hours. Today, almost all births are hospitalised and, therefore, they may adapt to the organizational requirements of the health care structures and staff. This research regards births in Udine, a city in north-eastern Italy, recorded at the beginning of the 19th century. The data on births come from the French civil register. Weather data are from very detailed data collection with three daily inputs. From the statistical point of view, we apply methods developed for circular data. The results confirm that the circadian rhythm of births is influenced by temperature. About the presenter: Alessio Fornasin is Professor of Demography at the University of Udine. He published extensively on historical demography and economic history and has participated in numerous national and international research projects. In recent years, his works have addressed the influence of the environment on demographic behavior in the past, the history of the family in the first half of the twentieth century, and the demographic aspects of the First World War. He is a former President of the Italian Society of Historical Demography (SIDeS).

Dear all, Our next seminar speaker at CEU is Devesh Rustagi (Warwick), who will talk about “Market Exposure, Civic Values, and Rules". You are all cordially invited to his in-person seminar. Time and venue: October 8, Wednesday, 11.15am – 12.30pm, QS B-505, at CEU (51 Quellenstrasse, 1100 Vienna). Abstract: Does exposure to markets foster or erode civic values and rules necessary to constrain opportunistic behavior for collective action? What mechanisms drive this effect? I investigate these questions using a natural experiment in Ethiopia, where markets evolved accidentally from military camps and their locations were determined by geographical suitability to defence rather than prospect for trade. Using market distance as a proxy for market exposure, I compare individuals who are from the same clan and attend the same market but vary in their distance to that market. I find a large negative effect of market distance on seven different experimental and survey measures of civic values and rules. Vignette studies reveal that these results arise because trade occurs primarily in livestock, which is prone to asymmetric information. In areas near markets, impersonal interactions create a demand for civic values and rules to foster exchange. In areas father from markets repeated interactions foster exchange and there is no need for civic values and rules. Falsifications tests show that when the scope of asymmetric information is limited, market exposure has no effect on civic values and rules. The conference will take place at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna) on 19th–20th February 2026.The conference aims to provide a platform for economists to present their recent research in the field of International Economics. We particularly encourage submissions from Ph.D. students, early-career faculty members, and young researchers to foster their development and provide networking opportunities. TIME & LOCATION The 18th FIW Research Conference on ‘International Economics’ will take place on Thursday, 19th February 2026 and Friday, 20th February 2026 at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna), Welthandelsplatz 1, 1020 Vienna, Austria. PAPER SUBMISSION We invite the submission of (full) working papers on all topics in the field of International Economics. Please submit your working papers via https://conference2026.fiw.ac.at until 31st October 2025. AWARDS Two prizes for the best contributions to the Research Conference will be awarded: the ‘Best Conference Paper Award 2026’ and the ‘Young Economist Award 2026’. Each award is worth € 1000. The ‘Young Economist Award 2026’ is intended for Ph.D. students, young faculty members and young researchers in similar positions. To be considered for this award all authors of the paper have to be 34 or younger at the time of submission. TOPICS COVERED The broad topic of the conference is ‘International Economics’.
