Februar und 01.März 2019 Die Kindheit ist eine sehr prägende Lebensphase für die Gesundheit. Gewohnheiten bilden sich heraus, die auch später einen gesunden Lebensstil fördern oder behindern. Die körperliche Entwicklung kann Resilienz gegenüber Krankheiten unterstützen oder eben nicht, und damit u.a. zu Kurzsichtigkeit, orthopädischen Leiden oder sogar Krebs führen. Auch im psychischen Bereich können Kinder Resilienz aufbauen oder Anfälligkeit für psychische Störungen entwickeln. Wird der Grundstock für health literacy bereits in der Schule gelegt, kann dies spätere Entscheidungen bezüglich Gesundheit und Gesundheitsversorgung beeinflussen. Andererseits kann eine durch Krankheit belastete Kindheit die Bildungschancen massiv behindern und damit die Möglichkeiten verringern, auf der sozialen Leiter aufzusteigen, was wiederum in engem Zusammenhang mit der späteren Gesundheit steht. Bereits in der Kindheit werden Präventionsaktivitäten, wie Impfungen, gesetzt, es können aber auch schon ernste Krankheiten auftreten, die eine kostenintensive Behandlung erfordern. Auf politischer Ebene erlangte die Kindergesundheit in den letzten Jahren wachsende Bedeutung, und einige Länder haben dementsprechend Gesundheitsstrategien für Kinder und Jugendliche entwickelt. Aus diesen und weiteren Gründen bietet die Kindergesundheit ein reichhaltiges Forschungsfeld und wurde daher als Generalthema für die vierte ATHEA Konferenz gewählt. Wie in den vorigen Konferenzen sind Einreichungen aus allen Bereichen der Gesundheitsökonomie und -politik willkommen, einschließlich des Bereichs der Langzeitpflege. Habits develop that will later promote or impede a healthy lifestyle. Physical development may or may not support resilience to disease, and lead, among others, to myopia, orthopedic diseases or even cancer. Also in the mental area, children can build resilience or develop susceptibility to mental disorders. Laying the foundation for health literacy at school may influence future health and health care decisions. On the other hand, a childhood burdened with illness can massively hinder educational opportunities, thereby diminishing the chances of advancing on the social ladder, which in turn is closely related to later health. Preventive activities, such as vaccinations, are already being set up in childhood, and serious illnesses can occur that call for cost-intensive treatment. At the political level, child health has become increasingly important in recent years, and some countries have accordingly developed health strategies for children and adolescents. For these and other reasons, child health offers a rich field of research and was therefore chosen as general theme for the fourth ATHEA conference. As in previous conferences, apart from the general theme reflected in keynotes and panel discussion, submissions from all other areas of health economics and policy are welcome, including long-term care. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Wednesday, October 24, with Christoph Kuzmics (Karl Franzens University of Graz) on "Limit Orders under Knightian Uncertainty" Abstract: It is a well known fact that a large proportion of individuals do not participate in the stock market. Dow and Werlang (ECMA 1992) provide an explanation of this observation that is based on these individuals being ambiguity averse. More specifically, they show that an ambiguity averse investor's demand function for a financial asset can be such that for a wide range of possible prices of this asset the DM neither buys nor shortsells the asset, which is not possible for the demand function of a subjective expected utility (SEU) maximizing investor. The demand function that Dow and Werlang construct is purely hypothetical in that it is the truthful answer to the question as to what the investor would hypothetically do as a function of all potential prices. Suppose that we instead ask the ambiguity averse investor to submit a limit order, i.e., a function from prices to choices, before the price realizes and suppose we insist that all prices could potentially realize. I show that in such a model we either find that ambiguity averse investors, along with SEU investors, also fully participate in the stock market (in the sense of Dow and Werlang) or that SEU investors, along with ambiguity averse investors, also do not participate in the stock market. Ambiguity aversion can, therefore, no more and no less explain the observed stock market non-participation than the SEU model. I use an analytically derived elasticity and combine it with data from household surveys, i.e. mean income, inequality and growth rates are all taken from household survey data. The novelty of the approach is twofold: The income distribution is approximated by the Fisk distribution and instead of National Accounting System (NAS) data only household survey data is used. I perform an illustrative ‘test’ of the model by replicating past poverty trends based on the survey data, and I find that the model generally performs well, except for highly unequal middle income countries. I then apply the model to forecast future poverty trends and to assess whether the first target of the Sustainable Development Goals, i.e. to eliminate poverty until 2030, can be reached in the different world regions. My results show that in East Asia, the target will most likely be reached. Also in Latin America and South Asia, poverty is projected to be very low by 2030.
