Dear Sir or Madam, We have the pleasure of inviting you to the Workshop "Fiscal policy and ageing" of the Austrian Fiscal Advisory Council, which will take place on Friday, October 6, 2017, on the premises of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, Otto-Wagner-Platz 3, 1090 Vienna, Austria. The aftermath of economic and financial crisis has been characterized by times of slow economic growth and increases in public debt to unprecedented levels for most EU member states. This came along with a shift of the focus of interest towards the short-run challenges. The limitation of fiscal space however also implies that maintaining long-run sustainability of public finances in the face of demographic change will become more challenging. The aim of the workshop is to revive the discussion of ageing and long-run fiscal sustainability. The workshop will focus on the following areas: Fiscal challenges and sustainability in an ageing society (Session I) Public spending on long term care and health (Session 2) and Pension reforms in advanced countries (Session 3). INVITATION Dear Madams and Sirs, We have the pleasure of inviting you to the 81st East Jour Fixe of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) on the topic of “Nonperforming loans in CESEE: macroeconomic dimension and resolution strategies,” which will take place on September 18, 2017. Since the global economic and financial crisis, nonperforming loans (NPLs) have increasingly moved into the spotlight as NPL ratios quickly reached unprecedented levels. Recent observations show that high NPLs are both a threat to financial stability and a major stumbling block to economic growth in many countries. Starting from these insights, the OeNB’s 81st East Jour Fixe will focus on the macroeconomic dimension of NPLs and on resolution strategies particularly for CESEE. Session 1 will set the stage for further discussion by clearly defining NPLs, comparing NPL volumes in CESEE and the euro area. Session 2 will discuss the determinants and macroeconomic impact of NPLs both from a household perspective, using survey data, and from a macroeconomic perspective. Session 3 will present various stakeholders’ views on progress made in NPL resolution. The Eastern European Social Policy Network (EESPN) is a network of researchers, policy advisers and representatives of public authorities working in the field of social welfare policy. Europe faces manifold societal challenges, out of which the unequal distribution of wealth between and within European territories is of upmost importance. The growing divide between the rich and the poor, the healthy and unhealthy, economic and social segregation by skill-levels and ethnic origin and persistent discrimination based on gender and age, to just name some social discrepancies, jeopardise Europe’s welfare, social cohesion and economic development. Well-designed social policies that help those most in need are required more than ever before across Europe, be it European member states or the (potential) candidate countries and the countries of the Eastern partnership. Various political strategy papers and action plans have been drafted and partly implemented in most countries. These, however, frequently miss the research base, are repeatedly not aligned with one another and often fall short of their final goal of helping those most in need. Representatives of the (potential) candidate countries and the countries of the Eastern partnership therefore stressed the need to establish strong linkages to research during the Launch event of the Eastern European Social Policy Network (19 September 2016, Vienna). To this end, participants of all countries present at the event requested to promote evidence-based policies and to strengthen cooperation between sectors, systems and policies, not only within countries but even more relevant across countries. Well-designed social policies that help those most in need contribute to reduce social inequalities and to achieve more distributive justice. In times of stressed social systems, effective social policy making that reduces economic and social discrepancies, however, is not an easy task. How can social policies best contribute to more distributive justice? Which strategies are the most promising in the various European regions? And: How can governments and research from the EU member states and (potential) candidate countries contribute to a social and cohesive Europe? [http://wiiw.ac.at] Dear Colleague, We cordially invite you to the WIIW SEMINAR 'POLICY PERSPECTIVES FOR EUROPEAN INTEGRATION' on MONDAY, 3 JULY 2017, 4 PM wiiw, Rahlgasse 3, 1060 Vienna, LIBRARY (2ND FLOOR) FORCES OF DISINTEGRATION IN THE WIDER EUROPEAN ECONOMY: A STRUCTURAL POLITICAL ECONOMY APPROACH IVANO CARDINALE Lecturer in Economics at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge and MICHAEL LANDESMANN Senior Research Associate and Former Scientific Director of wiiw Abstract External imbalances, diverging developments in export capacity and unbalanced growth patterns have characterized developments in the wider European economy (i.e. the economy of the European Union and its neighborhood) since the onset of the crisis. This talk analyses the major forces that push towards divergence and which generate the strains in the policy frameworks that have been set up in the European Union. A ‘structural political economy’ approach will be adopted to identify congruence and conflicts of interest between national and cross-border economic interests and how these lead to ‘nationalist’ or ‘integrationist’ biases in political-economy developments at national and European levels. Avenues will be explored concerning how the ‘integrationist project’ can be advanced in relation to some of the major challenges faced by national and European policy-makers.
