Evidence from the U.S. Abstract: We analyze the impact of rising import competition from China on U.S. innovative activities, both at the firm level and at the industry level. Using Compustat firm-level data, we identify a negative effect of import competition on R&D expenditures of U.S. public firms. Since import competition is measured at the industry level, the average negative effect masks potential heterogeneity across firms within an industry. Indeed we find that import competition induces R&D to reallocate towards more productive, less financially constrained and more profitable firms. When we take the analysis to the industry level, the negative effect of import competition goes away. In addition, our analysis using population census data suggests that rising competition from China in manufacturing has led to reallocation of researchers towards booming service industries, including business and repairs, personal services, and financial services. The WU-Workshop in Applied Econometrics (WUWAETRIX) is an informal workshop jointly organized by Jesus Crespo Cuaresma (WU Vienna) and Gernot Doppelhofer (NHH Bergen). Its fifth edition, WUWAETRIX-V: The Tremendous Workshop, will take place on June 14th, 2017 at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for constructive discussion of ongoing research on applied econometrics. The presentation of (eventually unfinished) work in progress is encouraged. In particular, work carried out by young researchers in the context of a PhD thesis will be given priority. Termin Freitag, 28. April 2017, 11 Uhr Ort Oesterreichische Nationalbank Otto-Wagner-Platz 3, 1090 Wien Veranstaltungssaal, EG Abstract The failure of the ubiquitous New Keynesian “Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium” (NK-DSGE) models to capture interactions of finance and the real economy is widely-recognized since the 2008-9 financial crisis. NK-DSGE models exclude money, debt and asset prices and, importantly, ignore changing credit markets. These problems stem from assuming unrealistic micro-foundations for household behaviour, and that aggregate behaviour mimics a fully-informed “representative agent” (both assumptions are embodied in the underlying “rational expectations permanent income” hypothesis (REPIH)). This survey critiques the NK-DSGE models and its integral REPIH model, and discusses alternative post-crisis general equilibrium models which do incorporate debt and allow crises to occur. But neither model type can be directly applied to policy-making. The survey reviews misspecifications in standard non-DSGE macro-models used by central banks (e.g. the Fed.´s FRB-US), and related co-integration literature linking consumption with household portfolios. These too omit most of the “financial accelerator”, ignoring credit shifts and crucially, aggregating liquid, illiquid assets, debt and housing into a single “net worth” construct. The survey´s second focus is to improve non-DSGE models for policy using the Latent Interactive Variable Equation System (LIVES) approach, in which aggregate consumption is jointly modelled with the main elements of household balance sheets, extracting credit conditions as a latent variable. Empirical work on aggregate data is surveyed revealing the important role of debt and financial assets and the time and context-dependent role of housing collateral. Rather than “one-size-fits-all” monetary and macro-prudential policy, institutional differences between countries then imply major differences for monetary policy transmission and policy. Our analysis is based on data from the German Tax Payer Panel (TPP) covering the entire population of taxpayers from 2001 to 2010. In particular, we pose the following questions: In what aspects does the distribution of individual market income risk differ between economic downturns and periods of economic growth? Which parts of the income distribution are affected the most and how do such potential differences translate into changes of market income inequality? In our analysis, we consider not only earnings but all components of individual market income, i.e. we distinguish between labor earnings, self-employment income, business income and capital income.
