PPRI Conference, Vienna, 12-13 October 2015 – Last call The WHO Collaborating Centre for Pharmaceutical Pricing and Reimbursement Policies organises the 3rd international PPRI Conference, entitled 'Pharmaceutical Pricing and Reimbursement Policies: Challenges Beyond the Financial Crisis’, held in Vienna on 12-13 October 2015. The conference provides a platform to discuss 'burning' issues in pricing and reimbursement policies of medicines - both from a global as well as European perspective. Current challenges and opportunities will be addressed, in particular also policy coordination and interface management. Further, the impacts and lessons learned from policies implemented in response to the financial crisis will be debated. Dear Colleague, We cordially invite you to the next wiiw seminar 'Policy Perspectives for European Integration' on Wednesday, 23 September 2015, 5 pm wiiw, Vienna 6, Rahlgasse 3, Library (2nd floor) Eurozone governance - squaring the trilemma Christian Odendahl chief economist at the Centre for European Reform (CER) Abstract The euro crisis has revealed major shortcomings in the architecture of the eurozone. At the same time, citizens in Europe want to be governed by national democracies. Can the euro work with national democracies? This paper argues that in order to make the euro viable, economically and politically, policy-makers need to start from the assumption that all policies should be in the hands of national democracies, and only integrate those areas in which a common response is crucial for the survival of the eurozone. Such an approach would focus on banks and capital markets; the lender-of-last-resort function of the ECB to both banks and sovereigns; monetary policy and overall demand; and finding national, central-bank-like mechanisms to enforce strongly counter-cyclical regulatory and fiscal policies. A European approach to structural reforms, however, would play a minor role at best. The study of the equilibria of our dynamic game leads to the concept of Bankruptcy-Free outputs (BF) in which no firm can drive another firm to bankruptcy without becoming bankrupt itself. We show that, in some cases, Cournot outputs are not a Markovian subgame perfect equilibrium because if these outputs were set, a firm may have incentives to ruin others. In these cases, standard trigger strategies in which collusion is sustained by infinite reversion to Cournot outputs cannot be used. We show that there is a Markov subgame perfect equilibrium in mixed strategies and study its properties. Predation occurs in equilibrium with a positive probability. Workshop "Political Economy of Trade Policy" Tuesday, September 22, 2015,10:30 a.m. The Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW), Sitzungssaal II ("Gobelinsaal"), Stubenring 1, 1011 Vienna Political Economy of Trade Policy The goal of this one-day workshop is to bring the scientific community on trade and political economy together with policy-makers on current trade negotiations, especially TTIP. The first part, the scientific workshop with a keynote lecture by Professor L. Alan Winters, will consist of research presentations in a seminar format on the political economy of trade deals. The second part, opening the audience to the wider public, will contain a speech by Lord Maude, UK Minister for Trade and Investment, followed by a panel discussion on the politics and strategic implications of the current trade negotiations.
