Anbei übermitteln wir Ihnen die Einladung zu einem VOSTA-Freitagsseminar von Michael König, Universität Zürich, mit dem Titel "Network Formation with Local Complements and Global Substitutes" Termin Freitag, 19. Juni 2015, 11.00 Uhr Ort Oesterreichische Nationalbank Otto-Wagner-Platz 3, 1090 Wien Veranstaltungssaal, EG Abstract In this paper we analyze R&D collaboration networks in industries where firms are competitors in the product market. Firms' benefits from collaborations arise by sharing knowledge about a cost-reducing technology. By forming collaborations, however, firms also change their own competitive position in the market as well as the overall market structure. We provide a general characterization of both equilibrium networks and endogenous production choices in the form of a Gibbs measure. We find that there exists a sharp transition from sparse to dense networks, and low and high output levels, respectively, with decreasing linking costs. Moreover, there exists an intermediate range of the linking cost for which multiple equilibria arise. The equilibrium selection is a path dependent process characterized by hysteresis. We also allow for firms to differ in their technological characteristics, investigate how this affects their propensity to collaborate and study the resulting network structure. We then analyze the efficient network maximizing social welfare, and find that the efficient graph is either empty, complete or shows a strong core periphery structure. We then estimate the model using a unique dataset on R&D collaborations and show that it can reproduce the empirically observed patterns. Finally, we perform a dynamic key player analysis, where we analyze the effect on welfare and industry production when a firm is removed from the network, taking into account that the network and production can dynamically adjust to shocks. Darüber hinaus ist sie seit 2010 Chair des Management Board der Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe. First, inequality of income and, even more so, wealth have steadily increased in the OECD world since the 1980s. Second, prevailing levels and drivers of inequality are not just obscene in terms of any conceivable notion of social justice; they are also severely damaging for the entire economies, societies and polities affected, not just for the losers. The puzzle, both theoretical and very practical, is why capitalist democracies allow the serious self-inflicted damage of widening inequality to continue. Verteilungswirkungen des deutschen Steuer- und Transfersystems" Kommentar: Silvia Rocha-Akis (WIFO) Abstract: Wir analysieren mittels einer repräsentativen und konsistent integrierten Datenbasis aus dem Sozio-oekonomischen Panel (SOEP) des DIW Berlin, der amtlichen Lohn- und Einkommensteuerstatistik und der Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe (EVS) des Statistischen Bundesamtes sowie dem Mikrosimulationsmodell STSM die Steuer- und Abgabenbelastung privater Haushalte in Deutschland im Zeitraum von 1998 bis 2015. Wir zeigen, dass durch die Integration der Einkommensteuerstatistik insbesondere die Gewinn- und Kapitaleinkommen wesentlich besser erfasst werden als in bisherigen Analysen mit Haushaltsdaten. Bei der Analyse der Steuer- und Abgabenbelastung gehen wir speziell auf die relative Bedeutung der Arbeitseinkommen und des Konsums sowie der Kapitaleinkommen ein und diskutieren die Verteilungswirkungen unterschiedlicher Inzidenzannahmen. Für den Zeitraum 1998-2015 zeigen wir, dass die Belastung der Haushaltseinkommen durch die stark gestiegenen Konsumsteuern die Entlastungswirkungen bei der Einkommensteuer übersteigt und ärmere Haushalte bezogen auf das laufende Einkommen durch die Steuerreformen insgesamt prozentuell wesentlich stärker belastet wurden als Haushalte im oberen Einkommensbereich. Dies wird durch die Regressivität der Sozialbeiträge verstärkt, die im Beobachtungszeitraum ebenfalls zugenommen haben. Sie ist als Teil der Synthese des WWWforEurope-Projekts, eines von der Europäischen Kommission finanzierten und vom Österreichischen Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung koordinierten 7. Rahmenprogramm-Projekts, zu verstehen. The development of population density, the availability of infrastructures or the connection to larger networks are relevant determining factors for urban development. With a series of current challenges in the background, such as demographic change, international migration, worldwide economic developments as well as climate change and energy efficiency, it is time to rethink of the city of the future.” Margit Noll has been with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in several positions since 1998. In charge of corporate strategy, she is managing the strategy process and its implementation at AIT. Since 2010 she has also been engaged in the development of the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe, in particular as chair of the management board. In this position she responsible for developing the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda of the initiative. Commentary Peter Mayerhofer (WIFO) The WWWforEurope lecture series aims at providing insights about the latest research undertaken in a broad range of areas. As part of the framing and synthesis of the WWWforEurope project, a 7th Framework Programme project funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO), the lecture series will cover the main project topics as well as cross-cutting issues, for example the dichotomy of growth and climate protection, gender equity, distributional aspects, education, green innovation and EU governance. We would like to invite interested researchers and the general public, who seek to learn about recent developments in these areas key for a socio-ecological transition, to this lecture series. We prove that this class of demand systems coincides with the set of demand systems that can be derived from discrete/continuous choice with iid type 1 extreme-value taste shocks. We also show that these demand systems are integrable with quasi-linear preferences. The pricing game is aggregative and payoff functions are uni-modal, although not necessarily quasi-concave. Firms' fitting-in and best-response functions can be entirely summarized by a uni-dimensional sufficient statistic, called the iota-markup. This allows to show that, under fairly weak conditions, the pricing game has a Nash equilibrium. Under stronger conditions, this equilibrium is unique. We also provide an algorithm which exploits the aggregative nature of the game to compute the pricing equilibrium with multiproduct firms and CES demands. The algorithm always converges. As an application, we derive a number of results on the dynamic optimality of myopic merger policy under differentiated Bertrand competition. Endogenous Matching: Adverse Selection and Moral Hazard on Demand (William Zame) Abstract: Technology has made a revolution in the provision and distribution of consumer goods. It is also making a (potential) revolution in the provision and distribution of services -- personal and corporate. The provision of such services form what is being called the on-demand economy. Understanding -- and guiding -- the on-demand economy presents many challenges. Typically, the output produced -- or the value of the service -- will depend both on the characteristics of the worker and task and on the effort exerted by the worker. The characteristics of the task may be observable but the characteristics of the worker will usually not be observable -- so there will usually be the potential for adverse selection -- and the effort exerted by the worker will (almost by definition) not be observable -- so there will always be the potential for moral hazard. We develop a flexible methodology for answering this central question of labor economics, using an empirical Bayes approach, without imposing the restrictions on heterogeneity and on cross-elasticities of labor demand assumed by the literature. Our approach allows to reduce the variance of estimates by exploiting the information embodied in economic structural models, while avoiding the inconsistency and non-robustness of misspecified structural models. This approach also allows to overcome the issues associated with pretesting and the conventional duality of testing theories / imposing theories. We characterize the geometry and the mean squared error of our estimator. One of our key theoretical results explicitly describes the risk-function of empirical Bayes under an asymptotic approximation. Simulations confirm our characterizations and the fact that our estimator uniformly dominates unrestricted estimation over a large space of parameter values.
